Caneel Bay with kids
Has anyone stayed at Caneel Bay with kids lately? I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out where to go with a 2 year old and have pretty much decided on Caneel Bay. Are there a few casual restaurants in Cruz bay that would be child friendly? Is it easy to get there? I don't want to eat at the hotel every night. We will also get a babysitter 1 or 2 nights and go out to a nice dinner. If you could only pick one what would it be? Would it be smart to rent a car? I've seen the posts regarding parking, but I like to have a car with our carseat. Thanks for the input. (and the previous suggestions on an older post)

hi.. we were just there and there were lots of kids...some were young some were max. 7 years old. the restaurants we loved were Paradiso (amazing food, lame service), Stone Terrace (amazing food and service) and morgan's mango (really good food and mellow atmosphere). there's a parking lot at Caneel... we rented a car but didn't use it at all..with 7 beaches we felt no need. susie

You can rent a car right at Caneel.
My suggestion is that you be sure to get a hard-top 4-door Jeep. I was amazed at how challenging some of the roads were. I've driven all over Jamaica and some on St. John were even more steep.
We went to Caneel 3 years ago with our then 5 yrd old child. It was really a nice trip. Let me know if you have any questions.

Glad to hear it was a nice trip. It has taken me some time to decide on a place to go. Did you rent your car ahead of time? Did you use it a lot or should we just get one for a few days? We will be there for one week. Are there any restaurants you recommend? (either with or without a child)Did you use the babysitting service at all? Thanks for your help. It's much appreciated.

We did not reserve a car ahead of time however I think knowing now that I would want only a 4WD hard top, I would call and reserve one now. Odds are they'd have one anyway....but why risk it.
I almost rented it for the full week we were there however I'm glad I did not.
It would have been a waste. Honestly, IMHO there is nowhere on St. John that was any more beautiful than Caneel.
Take a car for a day or two and see what you want to see. That's all you'll need. You can always take a taxi to town at night if you want.(probably a better idea at night anyway)
As far as restaurants go.... My wife and I did steal away to Asolare one night. It was enjoyable for a change of pace and scenery. But once again... no prettier than Caneel. We went to town one night before dinner at Caneel and had a drink at Ellingtons.(which is at Gallows Point) We took our child and it was enjoyable. Maybe we even ordered an app just to justify using the table.
We used the "kids club" a few times. It was very well run and clean. Also used a sitter one night and that went well too. Keep in kind however that our child was then 5.... with a 2 yr old, you might just like to stay on Caneel and not venture so far when you child is with a sitter.
The restaurants at Caneel or anywhere on St. John are expensive....we feel that time is precious...thus if we're not on that gorgeous beach every minute possible....its time wasted. If we were to to it again...a restaurant would have to be VERY good in order for us to leave the beach early so that we could make the 1/2 hour trek to wherever.
Have fun whatever you do....you'll love it..!!

Thanks for all the info. Will take your advice about the car. I'm sure we won't need it everyday and I'll call now to reserve. I think you're right about not going too far when the sitter is there. We will eat at Caneel and if it goes well maybe go to Asolare too. Have heard lots of good things about it. Thanks once again.
