Cancun August 2008 - Need help!

Hello!

Me and DH will be going to Cancun on August 2008, and would like to receive info and insights from you all!
A couple of questions:
1) best way to get there (flight or boat);
2) we'll be staying at the Moon Palace Resort (can't change, it's a congress getaway) - what to do around and next to it;
3) general info about the beach, the weather, shopping, etc.
Thanks in advance and a Happy New Year for all Fodorites!!!!
Best regards,
Debora

The best is to fly. It all depends where you are coming from but it could take days to get there by boat. The Moon Palace is not really in Cancun proper it is about a 20 minute drive south. Therre is really not much within walking distance of the resort but you have a lot of choices of places to go that is within a short drive.

It all depend what you are looking for in a vacation if you wnat more of a club/party scene then I would go into Cancun. If you are looking for something laid back I would suggestion making a day trip to Playa Del Carmen. They have great beaches and some great bars on the beach.

You could also go to Xel-Ha for the day. It is a wonderful place to snorkle, see wild bird, swim with dolphins or lay around in a hammock and do nothing.

Tulum is a nice place to Mayan ruins. But if you decide to visit there I would go earlier in the day because it can get very hot there in the afternoon. If you go Sundays you can get in for free. I think the ticket to go in are normally $5-$10pp.

Moon Palace is not known for there beach. They do have guys out there every morning cleaning up the seaweed but usually by mid afternoon the seaweed start to wash up on shore again.

But one thing I can say about the Moon Palace is they have a really nice pool area.

Thanks a lot! WeŽll be leaving from Miami. IŽll like to know if the Mayan ruins are far away from the Moon Palace. We have to stay there because itŽs the venue of a congress DH will be attending. But sure weŽll go to the places youŽve mentioned.
Thanks again, and if you have other info, please, let me know.

Tulum is about 45 minutes away from Moon Palace. Take plenty of sunscreen with you and re apply often. The Tulum area has come some wonderful beaches. They have a pretty beach at the ruins you can swim at.

Plan on pretty much a full day trip for Chichen Itza if done with a organized tour. It is well worth it as is Tulum. Coba is possible as well. It is also very interesting.
