Can you tell me where?
Dear Foddies,
I'm asking your help - again. I'm planning that get-the-hell-out-of-New-York-in-Februrary trip and I need some direction.
Looking for nice beaches, waves are ok, we like body surfing. Would like to do some snorkeling. Would like to be beachfront, have some kitchen or kitchenette option. Would like to be able to walk to restaurants and shops. We also LOVE using public transportation - so a bus system would be nice. We're not really All-Inclusive kinds of people. And we're not into the real commercial, Cancun thing.
It's just the two of us, 50ish, pretty good shape for hiking and such. Would like to stay @ $200-300/nt for accommodations but could go as high as $400 if the suggestion is perfect. We're not fancy but this is a vacation we've worked hard for, so, not too rustic, please. Looking to go early or late February, so to miss President's Day/Winter Break time.
We've been to St John (9.5), St Thomas (8.0), Curacao (9.0), Costa Rica (9.5), St Martin (more than 20 years ago - 9.5), Cancun (6.5), Puerto Rico (3X - 9.0) and on a cruise (5.0, bleck) we saw Belize (8.5), Grand Cayman (8.5), Rotan (9.0) and Cozemel (8.0) for very short, not very in-depth visits.
Tired of reading, yet? I think that covers all the particulars but if you have questions please ask.
Thanks in advance,
Misty

Yes! Negril sounds great! I also started looking at Play del Carmen and ended up finding stuff that sounds good in Puerto Morelos. Aruba is maybe a little more than we want to spend.
Is there good snorkeling in Jamaica? If yes, near Negril?

www.negrilonestop.com is the best website I know of for Negril. Go to the 'choose resort' and click on beach resorts, and cliff resorts. Then you can click on those to see the variety of places to stay available.
Sorry don't know about snorkeling. I know the water is turquoise blue clear and amazing. So not sure where there's be reefs for good snorkeling.
There's a very friendly and active Negril forum at Trip Advisor (helped me plan a return trip a couple years ago). They'd know.

Since you like St John I would recommend Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. Although I dont think they have a bus system though and it may be a bit quiet for your taste. The beaches are fantastic and the baths stunning/ Check out some rentals on Nail Bay. Mahoe bay is our favorite but the villas are expensive in the winter months.
PS: I work in NY and totally get what you mean by 'get the hell out of NY in Feb'

Ha! Yeah. New York winters - not for the weak.
So, I ended up with Negril, Jamaica. Fit our budget and most other items. AND (!!!) we can take a "Bob Marley Tour"!! Book the lodging, booked the flight, now I just have to count the days!

I'm thinking we'll give Dudley a call. And when we make the airport arrangements we can ask about the Bob Marley Tour. Do you have any food/restaurant recomds? Need a good, cheap bar on the the beach and some good, cheap local food spots. What was your favs when you were there last?

Hi I read your request and am amazed we are looking for the same things, snorkeling, beachfront, etc. My question is are you worried about being off the resort and commercialism? From NH and need to escape.

Hi 3G,
Is your concern with security or being bothered by vendors? I'm not worried about either - but I'm not a worrier, either. As far as vendors, it's my understanding that they, for the most part, will leave you alone if you tell them you're not interested. I kind of like meeting the locals so if they are bothering you send them over to my blanket and I'll keep them busy. About safety and security, I think it comes down to common sense and luck - and either you've got or you don't. What can you do? Start working on some good karma now and don't forget to pack your brains.
It's Jamaica - relax.
Good luck,
Misty

Visit www.vrbo.com (use id#564559) and check my calendar as I have some dates available in January due to a medical cancellation.

Instead of always saying "no" to beach vendors, just buy something and wear it every day to the beach... jewelry, t-shirt, whatever. It doesn't always work but seems a lot friendlier to me when I can say "I already bought something" instead of "no no no".
In Mexico I learned how to say in Spanish "Only one per day" and would point at my previous purchase. That always got a laugh.
