Bimini- Compleat Angler is Destroyed
It is my sad duty to Fodor's posters that The Compleat Angler hotel in Bimini burned to the ground Friday morning, January 13. The Compleat Angler's owner, Julian Brown, died trying to fight the fire. Writer Ernest Hemingway spent much time at the Copmpleat Angler in the mid-to-late 1930s and it is said that much of his novel "To Have and Have Not" was written at the inn. A museum at the inn dedicated to Hemingway also burned to the ground. Scores of Hemningway keepsakes were burned as well.
I spent a week at the Compleat Angler about fifteen years ago and will attest to it being a very comfortable inn, one which will be missed not only by the people of Bimini, who rely almost completely on tourism, but to visitors of tiny Bimini.
The burning of the Compleat Angler comes only a month after eleven natives of Bimini died in the Chalk seaplane crash off Miami.
