Best place to stay in Jamaica, near port antonio

Hi all,

Myself and my boyfriend have been asked to attend a wedding on his side in Port Antonio next July, my boyfriend used to live in Jamaica as a small child but can't remember it very much. We are travelling from Ireland so want to make a proper holiday out of it, we had thought of staying in Ocho Rios or Runaway Bay and hiring a car to go to Port Antonio but i've read here that can be dangerous?

Does anyone know of any good resorts to stay in we had thought of going all inclusive?? but again we are open to advice on this too? the wedding is in the seabell resort in port antonio, our plan was to stay somewhere else two weeks all inclusive and stay 2 nights in port antonio.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I just visited Port Antonio in December and hotel hopped a bit. It depends on what kind of experience you're looking for but here are the hotels I stayed at and some quick thoughts. I also have a travel website and will be posting my full trip report on there soon!

Hotel Mockingbird Hill - a small, 10 room eco-chic hotel that is very representative of the relaxed vibe in Port Antonio. Really great food and drinks with a daily changing menu based on what's fresh.

This hotel is for you if you like: small hotels / unique rooms / open air living. Not for you if you don't like bugs (the windows in the rooms don't have screens so there is wildlife right in your face 24/7). I recommend going for dinner though!

Hotel Great Huts - built in the style of an African village. each room is different (i particularly liked the queen sheba suite which has its own outdoor bath tub overlooking the ocean). A little kitschy but unique.

Trident hotel - luxury at its finest. Expensive, but beautiful rooms, amazing interior design, has its own movie theater and top end suites have outdoor tubs / showers / infinity pools.

Spanish Court hotel (kingston) - nice, comfortable hotel within kingston. clean rooms, fast wifi, solid restaurant for dinner and breakfast.

hope that's helpful!
