Best islands for snorkelling from the beach?

Help! We love snorkelling, but neither of us are strong swimmers, so we are looking for islands where there is good snorkelling off the beach.

We prefer quieter places, and would also appreciate any associated recommendations for hotels.

I'd suggest you try Grand Cayman. I was recently there and we did many shore excursions - some very close to shore, another required about a 5 minute swim. Also snorkeling with the stings rays is a neat experience. They are found in about 4 feet of water.

We love the Hilton in St. Lucia. It has a beautiful beach between the Pitons with a snorkel area that is absolutely beautiful. We also took a water taxi to the black beach at Anse Chastenet and they have a similar protected snorkeling area. We love the cottages with plunge pools at the Hilton, but one of the things we like best is the great snorkeling right off the beach.

Try St. John or Cozumel.

St. Kitts is a great island for off the beach snorkeling. There are about 7 sites I can think of immediately in the Frigate Bay area and on the south peninsula. The island itself is really beautiful and although it has good roads, safe water, etc. it still has all the natural wonders you could want. My husband and I are avid snorkelers and we absolutely love St. Kitts. Timothy Beach Resort is located on the Caribbean and you can snorkel right in front of the hotel. It is such a treat to be able to stay there and just go out snorkeling in the morning. The other sites are an easy drive because of its convenient location off the same roundabout as the s. peninsula. If you enjoy snorkeling, I would highly recommend staying there. You may even see some vervet monkeys on the back lawn. My husband is a good swimmer and was on his swim team in high school. We went on a cruise on our honeymoon and discovered "snorkel vests". I am certainly not a strong swimmer, but we both use these snorkel vests purchased from a local dive shop and stay out for an hour or more at a time.

We snorkelled right off the beach at T&C Island, Provo. It was very good.

Hubby dives / snorkels (I don't even SWIM) and recommends the following, as others noted:

- Cozumel
- Caymans
- St. John (Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay and pretty much a bunch of other 'bays' - gorgeous island)
- Anguilla

You might want to check out 'Snuba' at Coki Beach, St. Thomas, too.

Hope this helps.
