The British Colonial is a wonderful, classic, luxury hotel. The beach is small and private, but really quite nice. It's a favorite of mine. I've read some bad reviews also, but can't find fault with this property. If you're looking for resort life.. go else where but if you are looking for a quiet, serene classy place to hang out, try the BCH. Nice surroundings and close to everything.

Tom,

A couple of suggestions for you would be some of the outislands in the Bahamas, Eleuthera, Harbour Island, Abaco. There are some lovely smaller hotels that would fit your budget.

Try www.where2stay.com and "kalik" on the Bahamas and try some of the resorts listed. There will be pictures and rates for high season and the off season.

Favorites of mine are on Eleutehra and Harbour Island, like Romora Bay www.romorabay.com and Runaway Hill www.runawayhill.com. Try the www.briland.com site and the www.abaco.com site. On Eleuthera there's a new resort called Cocodimama, which looks beautiful, and it's right on the water.

On Nassau there's also Compas Point, which is lovely bungalows right on the water. Their restaurant is also one of the best on Nassau.

Hope this helps, and have a great time.

tweedy

Terry; It's hard to decipher what "the best" hotel means. I like the British Colonial, the old "BC" as the local Bahamians nickname her, because it has soul. The nine acres of grounds in back are beautiful and the architecture is splendid. The huge foyer and adjoining rooms are plush and the staff is very friendly. I like to support the "BC" because it has roots in Nassau, being the first hotel built there. If you like snorkeling, you'll notice a small breakwall to the left off the beach, facing the channel. I identified angel fish, filefish, a few baracuda, bar jacks, several octopus, a dozen spiny lobsters, blue and yellow tang, damsel fish, sergeant majors, and trumpet fish about 40 feet offshore around this breakwall. I like to walk up the stairs than Sean Connery did in the old James Bond films, which were filmed there. the Ministers of Parliament meet there often as well; it definately has history and soul. The multi-million dollar renovation hasn't ruined it's Bahamian ambience, like the Atlantis has. The Ocean Club, as well, delivers a deep Bahamian ambience, due to its grounds and beach area. Robert
