Are there any all vegetarian restaurants on STJ? What about organic healthfood stores?

We eat many organic items, cereals, breads, tahini, honey, just to name a few. Should we plan on bringing certain items with us or is there a large variety on the island?

Where will we buy our fresh veggies, what grocery store?

I don't about St. John in particular, but based on my other travels in the Caribbean, you will be better off bringing these items if they will be necessary for you.

FYI, in my research on Grenada, I just ran across a place that claims it is the only vegan tourist place in the Caribbean. It's a small place, only about 3 rooms, and all meals are included in the rates. The sample menu looked pretty good and they claim to use as many organic products as possible. Sounded interesting to me, but I know my husband would never go for it. You might want to consider it for future reference.

St John has 2 grocery stores...Dolphin Market and Starfish Market.I liked Starfish better..everything looked more fresh and they also have a deli that has a great selection.Not sure about vegetarian items but I would bet that they do have some.

Christie - Thnx for the recommendation. I'm sure that we will be okay. We'll just load up on whatever veggies they have and go with it. And cheese will go a long ways.

I am going to take some organic staples like cereal, tahini, peanut butter, honey, olive oil, plus some eggless organic pasta's. I think we'll be okay.

Do you remember if they had good Whole grains breads? Did you see flour tortilla shells by any chance? We can have black bean and cheese quesadilla's for lunch and be happy.

Coden--would you mind sharing the brand of eggless pasta you use? My son has egg allergies, and we are always looking for things that are egg-free (as well as nut-free). We are going to Grand Cayman in a couple of weeks and have similar issues since, in addition to the allergies, we are also mostly vegetarian (we do eat some fish). I'd be interested in hearing your experiences with the food when you get back from your trip, as St. John was another place we were considering going and might want to visit in future.

jspen - what I have in the pantry right now is Hodgson Mill. It is a Veggie Rotini. We love this pasta. No preservatives, no artificial colors, no artificial flavors.

It is not organic though. For organic, and I don't have any right now, I get it out of the organic aisle at Krogers. Many diff. brands to choose from. There is an organic rice veggie rotini one that is good.

Sorry about your sons egg allergy. That must be frightful. I will post what I find in regards to food on STJ. I hope to keep a running tab of what we purchased and what we spent so I can put it in my post. I just hope, since I'll be on vacation, that I don't forget to do this! Ha!!

Have a Grand time in Grand Cayman. We've only been once, 8 yrs ago, for the day while on a cruise. I loved GC. The water is awesome!!

We did not buy any bread while there so I cannot answer your question.Tortillas I believe that I saw some in Starfish.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think Hodgson Mill might make their pasta in a facility with egg, which means that we can't chance it. But I can double check. I'll look forward to hearing about your trip. When are you going? We can't wait to get to GC--just over two weeks to go! My packing list is similar to yours--I was also thinking of bringing beans and tortillas (a staple of my son's diet), nut-free granola (which I make, since it's hard to find nut-free granola in stores), and maybe some bread as well. My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I just don't know what we'll be able to buy there. Have a great trip!

Chrisie - Thnx...I don't think we'll have a problem with bread/tortillia's. Maybe I'll find a recipe for tortillia's today and see what is involved in making them. I think it is flour and water for the most part.

jspen - No where on the package does it say it is made in a factory that also has eggs/nuts in it. Unlike the package of Light Fluffy rotini that clearly states that. But!!!
