Beer in the BVI's

Thanks to all the great information I got from this site we have our plans all set. We are taking a windjammer cruise from Tortola and also spending 5 days on the island. We're going to stay at the Ole Works Inn.

Now we are wondering what kind of beer they have there. We've had Kaliks in the Bahamas, Red Stripe in Jamaca, Tiger's in Malaysia, Carlsburg in Thailand and of course Dos XX's and Tecate in Mexico. Do the BVI's have a beer? Hopefully better than the previous mentioned but we're not picky when we are on vacation.

Thanks, Terri

The BVIs don't brew their own beer. However, Carib (brewed in Trinidad) is widely available, and on occasion you can get St. Lucia's Piton. Both are OK.

However, there are local rums. (If you are staying at Ole Works, you should take a tour of Callwood's distillery at Cane Garden Bay -- quite an educational experience. One taste of the rum, or one look at the distillery, and you will KNOW that the bottle is meant purely for show, and NOT for drinking!). Pusser's is the big rum brand here, but I don't know where it is distilled.

Carib is great beer-sort of like Corona. Piton Beer is very popular, have not had a chance to try it yet.

The neigboring USVI has a brewery that makes a pretty good beer. It is the Virgin Islands Brewery and they make Blackbeard's ale (they also make Foxy's Lager, but it is very light like Caribe). I have not stayed in the BVI's yet so I don't know if they serve it there, although it is made on neighboring St. Croix. Just a thought.

Thanks for the info. We will look for Blackbeards. We are kind of spoiled here in Colorado with so many great microbreweries. But, like I said above, we enjoy whatever is available when vacationing!

Cheers
Terri
Hi Terri! Please post a trip report when you get back. We'll be staying at the Ole Works Inn for 8 days in April, and I'm dying to hear a review. Have a great trip!

Terri, we'll be there from the 16th- 24th of April, so I guess we won't be able to benefit from your trip report. I'm not worried though, because the word of mouth sounds great. It will will be our 2nd trip to Tortola, we stayed at Long Bay resort last time. We didn't have the problems that everyone else did, but even without all of the negative reviews we've read, we would have chosen a different place, just to try something new.

I can't wait, especially since we just had 13 inches of freezing wet cement dumped on us...(NE Mass.) April can't get here fast enough. You are welcome to join us for a "painkiller" when we get there!

Yes, I can't wait either. We've had more cold and snow this winter than usual here in Colorado and I am so anxious to be on a beach! (Although it is 60 degrees today tomorrow will be colder & wetter).

Well, we'll be there the same time as you for 2 nights. Maybe we'll run into you somewhere sipping a cold one. Have a great trip!

Terri
