BEACHES
My husband/I are looking to vacation early 2009 (late winter/early spring) possibly Aruba for sun,beaches,some simple water sports. Can we walk any beach no matter where we stay? and w/out being harassed by the local vendors, timeshare sellers?

All beaches are public w/ access through a hotel or parking at beach. I've never had any problems w/ local vendors. Come to think of it, I don't remember any...You may see a few t/s sellers. For the most part, Aruba is hassle-free.

One of the nices beaches I have been at is the 7 mile beach in Negril. You can walk forever. Threr are a few vendors along the way but a simple no thank you and your on your way. Very very nice. If you stay at a Sandals property you will also be able to stop in their sister resorts along the way. Nice break for a drink or the restroom...highly recomended

When we went to Aruba we did not see any vendors walking up and down the beach selling wares, timeshares or merchandise. There are watersports stations set up on Palm Beach. If your interested you go to the desk and sign up. They don't come to you and ask you to buy.
You can walk and use any beach, but chairs and shade that are property of the hotel are for registered guests. We did a beach hopping/snorkle tour with De Palm that was great.
Jamica, on the other hand, had lots of vendors on the beach and streets. The ones we encoutered were nice enough and took "no" for an answer.
The worst place we have ever been for vendors and time share sellers was Puerta Vallarta. They don't take "no" for an answer and they will also follow you and tell you their entire life story of why they need money, and if you still say no, that have a few unkind remarks. It was quite annoying.

You can walk up and down the beach in ARuba and no one will hassle you.
The water sports stands are all set up in front of the hotels. You will have to approach them for services. We walked along the Palm beach area in front of the different hotels and that was fine. I agree with above that the chairs set up are for the guests of the hotel they front.
