Beach umbrella rental on St John? Snorkel rental?

On St John, can one rent or buy beach umbrellas? As far as I can tell, our villa won't be stocked with them, and the beach shop at Cinnamon Bay campground doesn't seem to rent them. Anyone tried renting them at Maho Bay? Is it important to have one? Or are there shady trees close to the water on most beaches?
Snorkel gear - rent or buy? Also, all suggestions for novice snorkelers would be very welcome - should one take lessons? How does one know where the good snorkeling is on a particular beach - is there a guidebook that people can recommend?
Questions, questions.... all advice welcome.
Sanjay
I would definitely buy your snorkel gear. No matter where you go in the Caribbean, there will be places that you'll want to snorkel where equipment rental facilities aren't immediately available. Also, it's very important to have a well-fitting mask. There's nothing that can ruin a good time faster than getting salt water in your eyes.

And think how many other mouths those snorkles have been in! If you are lucky you will get one that's been cleaned by a dip in clorox! Buy your own snorkle and mask and rent the fins if you don't want to take them. There is no place to buy or rent beach umbrellas on St. John that I am aware of nor do any of the places rent them. You can usually find some shadey spots at most beaches.

Definitely, buy your own snorkel gear -- at least mask (for good fit) and especially snorkel -- you never know where they've been or how well disinfectected they've been (or not!) EEEuuuuu!

Go to the National Parks office located right in Cruz Bay (large new bldg. - can't miss it) and buy the book "St. John Off the Beaten Path". It has all the info you'll need regarding the best snorkeling spots. Most concierge/taxi drivers/Nat'l park office, etc, will direct you to Trunk Bay - - yes, easy start for beginners, has facilities (prepare to pay park admission), great beach, can be crowded by St. John standards if a cruise ship is around...but not much to see underwater compared to other spots. Might be a good start for getting your confidence up to go to better spots. No need for lessons -just pick up some brochures at the Nat'l Park office for basic tips on snorkeling - - above all, PLEASE don't step on or touch any coral - and please don't litter!
