Atlantis - No Bashing
Please can anyone honestly tell me about the Atlantis, Please no bashing I've already purchased the tickets and were going on the 7th of October. Previous postings have left me bewildered. I realize its expensive but is there any advise on places to eat-drink outside of the Atlantis? We are also taking our kids ages 14 & 16, any HELPFUL advise?

Well that's an odd request, Julie.
"Please tell me about Atlantis and give me advice but don't tell me anything I don't want to hear".
Hmmmmm.
Previous postings (most of which I've read) have a message. If you don't want to know what people think, then why ask?

The best thing I can say is, if you go in with low expectations and are prepared for what's there, you'll probably have a good time.
The thing (I think) which bothers many people about Atlantis is that the ads and hype mislead people to expect something that's not there....a high end luxury resort with great service, etc.
But, for people who read the pro and con opinions and go there with their eyes open, most seem to have a very good time.

As for food, the Deli (Murray's) is a favorite of many casual eaters (though I thought the food was simply greasy/starchy and cheap).
The buffets tend to be very overpriced for what you get.
There are a couple sandwich places and minimarts a couple blocks down the street from Atlantis, but nothing like you'd find in, say, a US beach resort area.
Your sons will probably have a super time. Most younger people do.
Hope you enjoy yourself as well. The beach there is very nice.

I withhold my opinion of the property as you asked. As for places to eat outside Atlantis, there are many, but most are in Nassau. (which is just a quick ferryboat away)
On PI, there's Anthony's Grill for dinner, Blue Marlin for the floor show (food's OK, but not great). News Cafe at Hurricane Hole is a outdoor deli/cafe, with very good prices, and the Green Parrot Grill has burgers/wings, shrimp baskets etc. in an outdoor setting (this is mainly an outdoor bar, but families are abundant.)

In Nassau, there's Conch Fritter, Crocodiles, and Iguana's for casual dining (burgers, salads, fritters) and the Poop Deck at Paradise Bridge for seafood. Arawak Cay's Fish Fry has a dozen or so casual local restaurants with lots of music, culture etc. Nassau also as all the fast food places you'll see in the states as well as Chinese(Double Dragon at the bridge, or Mandarin Court, Downtown)
Don't be afraid to ask the locals for infomation, they are a wealth of knowledge, and very friendly if treated with respect.

I'm with Janet. What advice do you really want? You really should have done your research before you booked this rip-off of a trip.
If you think of it as Vegas by the sea you'll be fine. Maybe that's your thing anyway and you'll be one of the one's who comes back singing the praises of Atlantis.
One word of advice: If you don't want to hear anything bad about Atlantis, you really need to stay off of this site.

Janet,
"Please tell me about Atlantis and give me advice but don't tell me anything I don't want to hear".
Hmmmmm. Thats bull Janet If you can't be helpful don't answer. Are you just another travel agent stearing people to the places you make money off of. I've noticed that most negative comments always come with "You should say here or there" I mentioned that I already read the previous boards- I got the message (expensive, lots of kids etc.) I was just looking for someone who has already been there and give me the best possible advise on how to enjoy the place everyone doesn't seem to like. As always ScubaGirl seemed to answer my question the best.
Everybody has a different meaning: Unfortunatelly many places change the owner due to less turnover. Some places are to expensive. Some don´t like Kenny Rodgers at the foot of the Bridge. I guess it is not bad and you get something for your money even if you go with kids. Sometimes you have bad scent in the bridge area to to sewerage problems. Say no if you want to eat food at Potters Cay. Check out first how the clean the fish and the tables. Do not go through the side streets at darkness, I recommend. Check Dolphin at Paradise Island and also their show. Still my favorite place is Cafe Jonnhy Canue at Cable Beach. I recommend frydays when they have a junkanoo show every half an hour. A bit more expensive than Dolphin, still try it. Have a nice time.

Julie,
Why would you go to a place that nobody seems to like......

Hey I got a question, is there any great places to eat-drink around the sulfur pits? No bashing please!

Give me a break, theres so much information regarging Atlantis (most than any other resort, perhaps), good and bad on this site, why did you just do a search?

Since there is not much good about Atlantis, I guess that's all the information you will find.

By the way, don't forget your rose colored glasses, that way you will not be so bewildered!

Julie, Janet did give you some helpful advice. Her response matched your request exactly as I read it, which was "I know I made a big mistake choosing Atlantic, how can I make the best of it". Considering your nasty reply to her, I think you are just the type who would enjoy such a tacky, low-class place. Enjoy!

Thanks, Rebecca.
If you'll read my reply, Julie, you'll see that I tried to point out the good points of Atlantis, such as, nice beach, kids seem to enjoy it, people who go in forewarned seem to have a good time, etc.

I could have gone on and on about the negatives, but I didn't <as per your request>.
BTW, I was at Atlantis only two months ago, so I'm speaking from very recent experience.
I'm also not a travel agent. I'm a university sociology professor and am on vacation this week.

Appears to me that you need some therapy, Julie. A little anger management, in particular.

Atlantis is wonderful, from the moment you arrive you feel like you are on the best place on earth. You are greeted with a smile while your luggage is quickly whisked to your room.Long trip, no problem theres an ice cold rum punch just for you to enjoy while you relax. Once inside your room you will not be able to believe your eyes, fully loaded fridge no charge including champagne and rum, a huge fresh smelling room fresh fowers, the most comfortable bed with dreamy pillows. Wait till you see the bathroom, a tub for two with a bath menu, that's right someone will come to your room and prepare a special bath with flower petals, for a small charge. The bathroom is large and clean with plenty of large white towels. Did I mention the view, It is magnificent, the twinkling lights of the nearest island, the bluest water, powdery white sand just steps from your room. The food is impeccable and exquisite, gourmet meals thoughtfully prepared and served. It is....a....Dream......oh no.....I'm sorry I just described Cap Juluca, so sorry I got confused. Well if it makes you feel better they do have one thing in common $$$$$$$

Well isn't it what you wanted to hear?

Just because other posts have left you "bewildered" does not mean they are not the truth.

Have fun, sounds like you will fit right in!

Julie,
You will have a great time... we loved it. Our room was great, the amenities are wonderful, the kids will have plenty to do. But do be prepared for the high cost of food, wherever you go. If your kids are not big on breakfast, pack some PopTarts or granola bars. Also some snack foods like crackers or cookies. Lunch can be tricky because if you're at the resort, it's a pain to go off and find someplace else to eat. So you might plan to eat lunch at a hamburger place on site ($60 for four), then go off for dinner in town. Within walking distance is Anthony's Caribbean grill, but our dinner with two kids meals (which have generous portions, by the way) was over $100.00. Tips are included in the checks so don't add to that. Go, have fun, and try not to be shell-shocked by the prices. And if you have girls, realize that everyone charges $2 per braid for those hairdos; it cost $50 a piece for my girls to have their hair done.... (and it hurt).

We used to live in Nassau, on PI before Atlantis was built. Among the places we used to go are the Poop Deck ( and there's one out west where people hang out now called the Poop Deck Too). One of my favourite places was the Travelers Rest, way out west near Compass point. Great banana daqs and as there is/was a recording studio there, we used to met many rock/pop stars there.

A

Hi Julie,

Just returned Sept 15 and had a great time. Meals are high, but you know that. Suggest the News Cafe for inexpensive lunch. Great sandwich menu and cheap for Nassau. We ate there a few times. As for dinner, try the Bahamian Club. Yes it is expensive, but much better than the buffet($38/pp) and you will not spend much more. Dinner for two with appetizer and desert was $115 with Lobster tail added to our Prime Rib. We took a doggy bag back too the room(ask for a comp fridge) and have leftovers for lunch the next day. Atlantis was not busy when we went. School is back in session, and not too many kids. There were a few, but not like at peak season. This is why we chose this time of year. We loved it, but we also had some friends who are native Bahamians that helped with some sights and set up a fishing/snorkeling trip for us with some other natives. It was great. Fished Bahamas style w/o poles, just a line, hook, and bait. I can't wait to go back to the Bahamas! May stay somewhere different like the family islands next time for a few days. I hope you have a blast! We did!

Don & Hilda

We have always enjoyed our stays at the Atlantis. The aquariums and the Dig are incredible.
For less expensive meals, you can try bringing breakfast bars of some sort or going to the News Stand at the Hurricane Hole Shopping Center (short walk from Atlantis) for breakfast. Lunch at the Cave, Shark Bites or the Lagoon Bar and Grille is not too expensive. Across the street is Anthony's Caribbean Grille. The Atlas Bar and Grille in the casino is not too expensive either. Our favorite restaurant is Villa D'Este which is not cheap, but not more than any other resort restaurants.

Hi Julie,
We visited Atlantis in July. Yes, I read all the pros and cons about the place. We went anyway. It was expensive but not a shock as we knew in advance what to expect. The only negative for us was the service. You do pay a lot for food and the gratuity is automatically included. However, we have received better service at our local fast food places. I have read all the negative comments about Atlantis and would still say that you will have a good time. It really is a marvel to look at. (The main buildings anyway.) They have several "Towers" that are not anywhere close to being spectacular to look at. The pools were crowded when we went but we were able to get chairs. It definitely does not live up to a 4 or 5 star rating but it is quite a unique place and we enjoyed ourselves. As with anyplace, you will get the good and the bad. Everyone has a different experience. Glad we went to see it all in person but it was probably a one time trip for us. Too many other great places to visit. I hope you and your family have a wonderful time. Don't take all the nasty comments too seriously. Attitude is everything when travelling and if you plan on having a good time...you will!
