Anyone stayed at Swept Away in Negril?

We are considering getting married and honeymoon at Swept Away. Our travel agent recommended it highly. I would like some specifics about the resort; how nice is it really? Good food is important to us and we are afraid that an all inclusive may compromise on this issue. What is the food really like and do they actually serve "premium" alcohol? We've seen Negril Beach and think it's beautiful; it's where to stay that we want to get right.

We just got back from Swept Away and loved it.

We were married there and they did a terrific job - our ceremony was at a church down the road from the resort and held the reception at the resort - excellent.

They do not compromise on food. Food was great - especially good in the gourmet restaurant - Feathers.

Yes they use all premium brand alcohol.

If you would like a trip report - please indicate here and we will email to you.

Hi Melissa! My husband and I were married at Swept Away this past August. If you do a search on this board, you will see the information I posted to previous posts. If you need any other information, feel free to ask. Good luck...you can't go wrong!

I was not married there however, my girf friend and I stayed there over New Years 2002. We loved the property and the very large rooms. Swept Away has by far the best athletic facilities in the carbbean with tons of tennis courts (free instruction), a huge lap pool, gym, squash courts, etc. With a little more effort this resort could be our #1 favorite in the caribbean.

Here are my complaints. 1) The food at Feathers (make reservations before you go to Jamaica - it's that hard to get into)was excellent. The food that was served to the masses was just ok. In our mind they need to work on this area. The website had indicated a fresh fruit and veggie bar. We pictured a buffet style table with fruits & Veggies as well as smoothies. It was not there, just a lame bar that had a limited selection.

2) In October 2001 a hurricane had wiped out most of SA's beach. By January 2002, they had purchased the a joining property and opened up it's beach (a short walk from the hotel). Check to see about the beach as it was crowded on the only beach they had.

3) The hotel was lacking enough beach chairs which caused some guest to fight over the use. This absolutely sucked!

Don't get me wrong, I have high standards and do think the resort is beautiful, but just needs some improvements. Good luck with your wedding.

We stayed at Swept Away over Thanksgiving week last year (2001). The rooms are great and have wonderful patios overlooking the beach or the garden (and no TV in the room which is a plus, too - who needs that on a romantic getaway). Over Thanksgiving they had a visiting fitness instructor from NYC who taught the BEST cardio-kickboxing classes I've ever had! Excellent fitness center with everything you ever need.

Our room was a garden suite which was nestled on a beautiful clearing in the garden where the wedding ceremonies take place. I saw two weddings while I was there and noticed that the staff takes very good care to arrange the site perfectly, protect the cake (from birds or strangers) and arrange a reception immediately following (for the two of you or a group). Beautiful!

The only negative thing I have to mention is that the beach was severely eroded away - nothing like the old pictures of Negril. (Not much beach left to relax on, but the water is really nice once you get in.) Also, prepare yourself for a heck of a bus ride from Montego Bay to Negril - major road construction made for a nail-biting obstacle course with a fearless driver. You have to do the bus ride once (for the experience - they even have t-shirts about it), but know that on your second trip to Swept Away, they will offer you a complimentary plane ride from Montego Bay to Negril. (We may take them up on it next time.)

Beautiful choice for a destination wedding. Have fun!

Hi Melissa,

We were married and honeymooned at Swept Away this year.

Regarding some the opinions above - just a couple of things......

We found the food very good at all meals. There is a fruit and veggie display at each meal - and the veggie bar is great with terrific smoothies and any tropical fruit drink you ask for - or veggie drink. The veggie bar is not lame as a poster above suggests - you can get any fruit or veggie drink you want - if you ask. They also have food - chicken wraps and other snacks.

I did not notice the beach to be eroded away. Periodically they have storms which takes part of the beach - but it is recovered and the beach at Swept Away is very nice - and certainly plenty big enough.

As for the beach chairs - if the resort is full - it may be a good idea to go out in the morning and put towels etc. on a chair so you have them for the day - very simple.

The drive from MB to Negril is fine now. There was construction but it has been completed. Our trips were smooth - they are crazy drivers in Jamaica - but just sit back and relax.

Melissa, My husband and I just returned from Swept Away - we stayed Nov. 16 - 21st, the only problem was it wasn't long enough - we hated to leave! The resort was great - clean, the service excellent and the food was very good and yes "premium" alcohol all day and night --- all you can drink and Red Stripe on draft---the people who worked at the resort are friendly and interesting---This resort exceeded my expectations! Have a great time!

Anyone know about the construction situation at Swept Away? I heard that is was supposed to begin over the summer but that it never started.

Someone mentioned that the ride is difficult from Montego Bay to Negril. This is not true. The road to Negril is complete and it only takes 1 hour from Montego Bay. It is not windy and bumpy as before. Swept Away is a very lovely resort. The rooms do not have TV's. Couples Negril is a great alternative as is RIU Tropical or Sandals Negril. Good luck!

I have stayed at Swept Away three times. November 2000, March 2002, July 2002. I LOVE IT and will be going back for eight nights in Feb 2003. The only bad part about Swept Away was having to go home. I missed the problem with the beach eroding, but I was there in 2000 and then twice in 2002 and never noticed anything wrong with the beach so it must be back to normal.

I would like to comment that you DO need to request premium liquor in your drinks. They will automatically give you the generic brands if you don't ask otherwise.

I too am VERY interested in the status of the construction at Swept Away since I will be there this coming Feb and I hope hope hope that there is no construction going on. And I have to say that I wish they would not expand the resort. I love the size of Swept Away and would even pay more to keep the status quo.

One additonal comment ..no TV . .is the best!!!
