Anybody contract a parasite while in the Caribbean?

I saw a show on this yesterday about people getting some nasty parasites while travelling in warm, tropical locations. Not sure if any of these were in the Caribbean. Anyway, just wondered if anyone had this happen while in the Caribbean. If so, what island were you on?

I live in the Caribbean and have never had any trouble with parasites, except for the ones in bars trying to cadge a free drink
My doctor recommends that we keep our anti-tetanus shots up to date though, as tetanus "germs" love puncture wounds which are especially hard to heal in humid climates.
I don't think you need to worry overly much. It's possible to pick up horrible stuff wherever you live.
Hi Benji,
You might be thinking of schistomiasis (not sure of the spelling).
It is a small parasite usually found in bodies of inland water in the Caribbean.
I've read not to swim in inland fresh water due to it.
You might also be referring to sea lice which can be found when swimming in ocean water. They are very small and causes a rash with bad itching.
I do not believe either one of these are serious problems anywhere.

I'm sure I saw the same show, "Eaten Alive" on Animal Planet. Makes you very much more aware of where you are going & what can happen! Scary! I have contracted Giardia in Mexico & my husband got dengue fever in Central America. The possibility exists many places though. It is up to you how confining you would let that be. But anyplace the recommends (highly) malaria medication is someplace I will NOT be going!
