Mike

You have trawled up a thread from 9 years ago to post.

Best idea is to start a new thread titled retiring to the Caribbean.

Simply choose the "start a new thread" option in the left hand corner, that way posters know what you want.

Retirement?

We are heading for The Outlands of The Bahamas, probably Hopetown.

Totally laid back, friendly people, safe anchorages and incredible sealife.

Well I went to St. Thomas, USVI then to Tortola, BVI to sail around the BVIS and not once did I see a damn shark, even tho I wanted to desperately. We didn't dive on any reefs although that would be neat to do, I saw Barracuda and Tarpon, those were the biggest fish I saw, I hated seeing Sea Urcins they gave me the creeps.

I loved Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and the funny part is im wearing a shirt from there. I also went to Peter, Norman, Cooper, Lamesure (however its spelled) and little Lameshoure, Great Harbour, The Bite (where the Willey T is! the floating bar), and Ocean Seven. The Indians ( I recomend snorkeling there great place), Tortola, Sandy Cay, Sandy Spit, Little Jost Van Dyke. I had a great trip. I recomend all of those places.

We had a nurse shark swim right between us while snorkeling around St. John once.

We stuck our heads out of the water, started laughing, and stuck our heads right back in again. It was a "small" nurse shark, maybe 3-4 ft. or so.

It did't bother us that day, but the next day we were a bit nervous going in. Didn't stop us though. Just part of the experience.

mike_c, please if you want any useful advice start your own thread - with something about your subject in the title so those who have such info will know to offer it.
there are a number of fodor posters who have bought in the islands who can help you get started.

I had my first shark encounter today. USVI, Water Island, Limestone Bay/Beach. I was snorkeling in @20-25 feet of water along where a sandy bottom joins a long coral reef. I saw three sharks approaching. The first passed under me without noticing me. The second decided to come have a look and got so close, I had to kick him in the face with my fin, and he turned and swam away. The third got even closer, and again I had to hick him to get him to swim away.

They were @6-8 feet in length, medium to dark brown. Smaller eyes. trying to do the research to find out their type as I'm not familiar with the types of sharks. They may have just been curious and harmless, but one never knows where he falls in the food chain!

I find it hard to believe that threads that are 11 years old are still here....

To answer the question for what it's worth, there are sharks around most of the islands. I have seen many, and that includes the USVI. Most the sharks you'll see will be nurse sharks, and an occaisional Lemon shark. There really is nothing to worry about, as the sharks you (Rarely) will encounter in the Caribbean, will not be dangerous man-eaters.

I live on St John and was a bit freaked about sharks before my move here. I researched online about the topic and couldn't find ANY documented shark attacks in the usvi in over 30 years. Now that I live here, I have had some run ins with sharks but they really are nothing to be afraid of. There has been a five foot lemon shark spotted in more shallow waters around the north shore and there has been talk of a rather large hammer head spotted by divers in deeper waters, but the most common sharks you will see are nurse sharks which are basically glorified catfish

Prior to moving here, I was afraid to be in the ocean past my waist....now I'm snorkeling in water 30 feet deep and intend to get my dive certification in the fall. These are peaceful waters...Even the jellyfish stings are like mosquito bites <3
