Antigua vs Bahamas for Honeymoon

Hello there!
I have been endlessly reading through posts on this forum to find a honeymoon destination that has everything my fiance and i are looking for. We will be traveling in June. We have narrowed down our results to Antigua or Paradise Island, Bahamas. This is more of an "experience-oriented" post rather than one that considers budget since we have worked in the costs of going to either of these places and will not be using cost as a basis for deciding between the two.

I am asking if any of you who are much much well traveled than we are if you believe one of these places meets our needs more than the other.

-BOTH off the beach snorkeling and snorkeling by excursion (doesn't have to be the BEST of the Caribbean but lots of fish to see)
-fine dining options outside of resorts (or ones in other resorts accessible to people not staying there). since most of the places we are looking at are AIs, we will obviously take advantage of that, but want variety as well
-beautiful, swim-able beaches
-some shopping (not extensive, just some local places)
some areas of interest besides the beach (forests, ziplining, historical places of interest, etc)

I am leaning towards Antigua because i think it has a little of all of that, but he would like to explore the option of Atlantis for the same reason (and he loves that it has an aquarium as well), however i cant find any comparisons between the two.

Thanks for all your input in advance!!

I didnt find any fine dining in Antigua, there is probably some in the better hotels, nor much shopping or snorkelling. Several beautiful swimable beaches and some interesting places eg Nelsons Dockyard, Bettys Hope, Stingray city. You will find better restaurants and snorkelling in the Bahamas.

Thanks for the feedback! How do you feel about the Cayman Islands meeting our criteria?

We did care for Paradise Island or Nassau. We did visit Atlantis and it was a let down. Guests are limited to certain areas of the hotel, which is the casino, aquarium and digs. Can't get any where near the beach or water park. They have guards at all the no-no entrances, who were not very nice and kept ushering people back into the casino. We didn't find much to do off property. A little shopping at the craft market, the small zoo and water related activities. Not a place I would return to. What AI's are you looking at on Paradise Island? I would avoid Breezes and the RIU like the plague.

We've been to Grand Cayman twice. Love 7 Mile Beach, and the snorkeling there is still better than any other Island we've been to. The price for food and drinks are really high and you won't find forests or zip lines there. There are not any AI resorts on 7 Mile Beach either. If you choose GC, staying on 7 Mile Beach is really a must. (At least it is for us)

I would go with CG over Paradise Island.

Grand Cayman has fine dining, beautiful 7 Mile beach, shopping, snorkelling and the best scuba that I have so far, but not much of interest outside of that, ie the island itself is not pretty, it is very Americanised, it's like going to the Caribbean without really going to the Caribbean. It has lots of those little shopping plazas just like the US. Camana Bay is like being in Florida, nothing wrong with that, quite liked it.

If a Caribbean experience is most important with interesting sites, it has to be Antigua.

If shopping fine dining snorkelling and beaches is most important, Grand Cayman or Paradise Island. The aquarium at Atlantis is impressive, Cabbage Beach is very nice but I am not sure about AI. Loads of fish to see on a snorkelling trip in Nassau harbour.

Thank you both for your responses. The more I read the more I see that this seems to be the general consensus. At this point were still undecided between staying on seven mile beach or staying in Nassau for most of our trip with a few days in Atlantis.

Thanks again!

"but not much of interest outside of that"

That is simply not true. If Odin truly believes that than I he didn't have a very good vacation.

The Island might be flat, but it is a true Caribbean Island and absolutely gorgeous with white sand beaches, crystal clear water and excellent snorkeling. I find it quite amusing that someone that is British knows what Americanised really is. Too funny.

Check out CaymanIslands.ky for additional information.

Things of interest:

Sting Ray City, Rum Point, the Bontantical Gardens, Pedro St. James, The Shell House, the Blow Holes, an Island Tour, Nautilus semi sub, the atlantis sub, the Pirate Ship, jet skis, mini boats, food tour, catamaran sails, snorkeling the Wreck of the Ten Sails, shopping in Georgetown, visit Hell and the turtle farm, get a map and do the walk in snorkeling spots, rent a car and do your own Island tour. Just to name a few. There is plenty to see and do on a 7 day vacation. So much we had to go twice to see most of it.

Additional site for information on things to see and do:

We haven't been to Antigua because we couldn't find enough things to see and do to justify the expense. However, it is still on our list for someday.

For what you want, caymans comes closest.

Snorkeling, caymans, othe 2 mediocre at best

Fine dining, caymans again. Other 2 mediocre at best

Beaches? I like cayman the best, followed by Antigua, then Paradise

What Antigua has above others: culture and overall scenery

What Paradise has above others: fun! Atlantis is a blast. Ability to day trip to Exumas and Harbour Island, now those are beaches!
