Antigua

Looking for family vacation next spring with two teenagers-like nice beaches, hiking, historic sites-don't need nightlife or all inclusives. How is Antigua for this type of vacation? Considering Antigua village, Yepton beach or Siboney? Any help would be apprciated or other suggestions. As a family we have been to Bermuda,Grand Cayman,USVI,Guadeloupe,Martinique,St.Kitts and Curacao-have enjoyed them all.Thanks.

Antigua is great fun. Some of the most beautiful beaches I've seen. Antigua Village and Siboney are nice, but they are on Dickenson Bay which is crowded and touristy. It's on the west coast, though, so the sunsets are gorgeous. I was at Yepton many years ago and I believe their beach is man made. It has an artificial feel to it. St. James Club is nice and not too far from English Harbor, which is a great place to check out and soak up some history. Don't miss Shirley Heights which overlooks the harbor--great views at sunset. Likewise Half Moon Bay--gorgeous beach. As an alternative destination I would recommend Bonaire. It is small, quiet, beautiful, and very popular with the diving/windsurfing crowd. Harbor Village is where I stayed and it was great. But an oceanfront room is a must. Have fun!

We stayed at Barrymore Beach Club on Runaway Bay in March. Just perfect! Their beach is very quiet but is only about a 10 minute walk over to Siboney and Antigua Village. Lots to do in walking distance from Barrymore. Their apartments are also in very nice condition and comfortable.

If you like history and good beaches, you will love Antigua! My husband is a big history buff, so that was a big reason we chose Antigua. <BR> <BR>AVBC is nice, and it's good to have the kitchen. (You can stock up on groceries at the Epicurean at Woods Center, which is a 5-miniute cab ride from AVBC.) Dickinson bay is really not terribly crowded. Besides, it is where most of the "action" is and your teens will like that. They can rent sailboats, jet skis, etc. <BR> <BR>There is no need to go all-inclusive on Antigua! There are tons of good restaurants on the island. We liked Home (expensive but worth it), Pari's Pizza, and Spinnaker's, and we walked to all of these from Dickinson Bay. Miller's By The Sea will even come and pick you up for dinner! We didn't go into St. John's but I hear there are good places there, too. <BR> <BR>Do a jeep tour with Bo Tours (www.botours.com) and you will get to see several historic sites as well as the rest of the island. We had a blast! The price includes a good BBQ lunch, too. <BR> <BR>Be sure and go to Shirley Heights for the Sunday night party at sunset. The whole island shows up for the reggae music after dark! You can eat good BBQ there in the evening and listen to a steel drum band before the reggae starts. <BR> <BR>English Harbour is also a good day trip. Go in the morning and go through the museum. It is beautifully restored; my husband was quite impressed. Have a drink at the Admiral's Inn, too. <BR> <BR>If you like to snorkel, go on the Wadadli or Kokomo Cat for a day tour. They pick up at Dickinson in the morning and drop off int he late afternoon. <BR> <BR>Your teens might like the Jolly Roger Pirate Cruise. Some friends at the resort really enjoyed it, but we didn't go. <BR> <BR>Have a GREAT trip!!

Antigua is a wonderful ( Adult ) vacation spot. I dont think there are enough activities or other teenagers to hang around with. I agree with all the other comments on the board but I would not take my teens to this island. Of course you can do the water stuff every day. The Jolly Roger is a booze cruise ( trust me I've been on it 3 times). The Widaldi and Kokomo also are very drink related so adult supervision will be needed unless you dont care about those things. Anything that offers unlimited rum punch usually gets that way. So maybe you want to look at more family type vacation spots or just leave the kids at home. Good luck!

Hi, Kirk! Do you mean Siboney on Dickenson Bay? If so,then unless it has undergone a MAJOR renovation in the past 5 years, you will be very disappointed with Siboney.( I posted <BR>some time ago re: the problems with Siboney. Why don't you do a search on <BR>Siboney to get comments from others?). <BR>Essentially, there is no beach in front <BR>of the 'apartments', the pool was so <BR>disgusting that we wouldn't even consider going near it! The accomodations were cramped....your teens <BR>would HATE the place! Now, on the bright side, the restaurant @ Siboney is excellent.....tables @ water's edge, excellent seafood & friendly service. <BR> We checked out of Siboney & ended up <BR>a little farther North on the beach @ <BR>Rex Halcyon where the quality of the accomodations varies tremendously from <BR>room to room, suite to suite. Overall, it's an ok place. The beach is beautiful although very crowded when we were there in February. Sunsets are SPECTACULAR! <BR>Lots of water stuff for your teens! Also <BR>tennis if you want it! Good pizza place <BR>'up the hill'. Now...the main restaurant <BR>@ Rex overlooks the parking lot & this is a big, big negative ( I can still smell the exhaust from the buses pulling in & out in the morning!). But, there is <BR>another little restaurant called Whari Pier ( or something like that which is great for lunch....it's on stilts on the water!) Anyway....hope this helps! Let us <BR>know where you end up going & what you thought! Have a great trip! <BR>
