Assuming it's a 2 class plane, the upgrade is moderate. Space, of course, is the reason for upgrading.
Food is still a negligible consideration (for those carriers still serving it. Last I flew first class on AA a couple months ago there were peanuts and drinks only on a 3 hour flight. Caribbean may be different). Just got back from a first class flight on USAirways to Caribbean and had old fashioned 3 course meal served.

The real benefit of first class is flying on a 3 class plane on a transcontinental route. Much better food, space and the quality of your mood on arrival is much better.

Hi Sev!
Thre is only business class on AA to the caribbean. The main difference is room. Last flight a few months ago, they were still serving "real food" too. There is no charge for alcoholic beverages, and there is much more attention for passengers. There is also never a struggle for overhead storage space for any carry ons you may have.

Depending on the plane you are flying the seats can range from a large recliner with raising foot rests with personal TV screens that pop out of the arm rests to the standard larger leather first class seats. The planes are ususlly Airbus 300 or 757. I love business class, no matter what seats you have it is a luxury compared to coach!

To view your seats on American - go to www.aa.com. On the left of the screen you will see "reservations" - on reservations pull down you will see "check available seats" click on that, punch in your flight info and the seat plan will come up and you will see where your seats are!

I had similar experience to SandyFeet's. Last month we flew first/business to the Caribbean and the main perk was the room, as I am not a big boozer on early morning flight. Breakfast on the outbound leg was on the unpleasant side, IMO. Return trip was in evening and we did have a 3 course meal that was actually enjoyable.

One of the big advantages, besides the extra room etc, is first off the plane. We do carry on luggage, and just breeze thru immigration. Nice!
