Advice needed for Nassau

My wife and I will be spending two days in Nassau in early April. Would you give us as many "don't miss" activities as you can? We prefer mostly sightseeing rather than scuba diving or very demanding sports activities.
Thanks,
Casey

Casey: You didn't say where you would be staying, like downtown, Cable Beach, Paradise Island, etc., but whichever it is, there will be lots to do.

During the day, you could get out and swim and/or snorkel in the ocean and then got to your room and change in the afternoon and head out. You can take the public buses during the day and go downtown. There, you can visit the seaport with cruise ships, yachts and sailboats. Nearby, you can also go to the famous "straw market" which is something all visitors ought to experience. There is some cool architecture that you can see around town, also.

In the evening, you could take a taxi (barter on price beforehand) to various restaurants and casinos, but try to check out the Atlantis on Paradise Island. They have an underground aquarium that is free to visitors of the hotel.

For discounts on snacks, bus to the Winn-Dixie supermarket near Cable Beach.

Have fun!
We just got back from Nassau yesterday, so are full of suggestions. We stayed at a small guest house on Paradise Island that was only accessible by boat, so it was just a little too difficult to get to Cable Beach. Went to Nassau a lot though and the Atlantis on Paradise Island shouldn't be missed for at least a meal or a visit. However if you want to visit there during the day and tour the whole grounds, you're supposed to buy day passes for $25/person! We didn't and managed to avoid the security guards for most of the day (finally caught up with us and politely reminded us that that area was for guest only), but the owner of our guest house said she'd heard that buying the passes was well worth it. It's definitely not just another hotel!

The boat trip to Blue Lagoon Island is a major attraction and we enjoyed it, but our activities there were limited as it was a very windy day and we coulnd't go swimming or snorkeling off the beaches. They do have great hammocks for relaxing, a bar and live music, a shallow lagoon to get wet or pedal water bikes. Dolphin Encounters is also on that Island if you'd like to swim or play with the Dolphins or watch others do it.

As for Nassau, the Straw Market is fun and we also thought the brand new Pirates of the Caribbean museum was very well-done and interesting (Nassau was a big pirate hang-out). The Bahamian Kitchen was a good casual restaurant with no tourists and Conch Fritters across from the Colonial Hotel is tourists and locals, more lively with a band at night. There's not much nightlife in downtown Nassau as far as shops being open and lots of street activity. I'm sure Cable Beach has lots of that and the Atlantis casino and restaurants are hot spots. There are apparently a lot of glass bottom boat tours that leave from Nassau harbor, but the day we tried to find them, none of them were running, as the cruise ships weren't in town that day.

We loved the Flying Cloud trip recommended by others in this forum for a catamaran sail to Victoria Reef for good snorkeling--our favorite organized activity. Please e-mail me if you'd like more specifics.

Casey, you might also want to go to the
Ardastra Zoo and Gardens and the Botanical Garden (very formal garden, near the Zoo) or Crystal Cay for the underwater aquarium (and you don't get wet)

When you get to your hotel, there will be all kinds of brochures and discount shopping coupons so you can decide what you want to do. If you are staying on board a ship, in the center of the Straw Market is the Ministry of Tourism and all the brochures are there as well.

Two additional restaurants I would recommend are Cafe Mattise and Greycliff's, (which is the only 5 star in the carribean) great service and food, and well worth the trip, but it is a bit pricy.

Have a GREAT TRIP, and let me know if you need any more info.

tweedy
