Will the Canadians let me in?
We would like to take an impromptu trip to Canada for a couple days. My US passport expires in Oct 2014 and I don't have time to renew before our departure date. Will that pose a problem? I have always heard you should get it renewed 6 months in advance and some countries might not let you in within that window for fear you will stay beyond your expiration date. Thoughts/Advice?? Thanks!

If you want official Canadian government policy, go to the website http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-vo...-eng.html#_s2a
Be careful of other Internet sites trying to look like official sources.
You will note that it says "valid" passport without specifying a deadline. That doesn't mean the Canadian border guard might not be curious if your expiry date is a few days or weeks ahead of when you are crossing.
That six-month requirement you mention is valid to enter some places but not others. For instance, Western Europe requires two months (if I remember correctly.)
You might also want to check US regulations about returning home since your country is known for its scrutiny.

I wouldn't worry unless you have less than a month or two on your passport. When I went home to the US last Christmas, I had less than four months left on my passport and had no issues either way (albeit I use my Nexus card as my primary travel document).
Just indicate that you are only going to Canada for a few days, and be able simply & clearly explain your travel plans. As long as you don't raise any red flags, I can't seem them giving you any hassle.
Are you sure you can't renew? They tend to be pretty quick if you pay for expedited services.
