I buy my sugar free Werthers in Toronto at Shoppers Drug Mart in the diet/diabetic food section which some of the newer, renovated stores have (usually near the health food/vitamins).

I too remember those yummy Macintosh red plaid boxes. BUT...I used to put mine on the radiator so the toffee would get really soft and gooey! MMMM...

Oh traveller, Send my some cherries!! I'll gladly trade almost anything.
I bought some here from Washington and just about died when I looked at my bill. I didn't know why my few groceries had cost so much. The cherries were $10 for a little bag. As I enjoyed each one.. I kept telling myself to REALLY enjoy them.

Kodi - I think we are changing the thread from Werthers to cherries. I don't want to upset you but I just bought from the orchard directly 25 lbs of gorgeous cherries to take to my brother in Calgary tomorrow. (He likes to give them to his friends) I paid $30. I know its terrible when I go in the stores and see the prices but that's one of the reasons we decided to buy here. Next peaches, apricots, vegetables - I love summer in the Okanagan (not to mention the wine)

But cherries are right up at the top of the list with Werther's.
Oh to live in the Okanagan!
I can picture coming along that road and seeing the view of Osoyoos from way up high.

HOpefully I'll get some cheaper cherries in Alberta this week. I hope your brother enjoys them.

kodi, I know this is an ancient thread but wanted to tell you that our exchange partners in Maui requested that I bring them McIntosh toffee! Of course I only remember the red boxes from childhood so decided to google McIntosh toffee to see whether they meant something more sophisticated and came up with your old thread! Small world!

Maybe you should take a few boxes of McIntosh toffee with you to South America for gifts, now that we know it's such a Canadian icon!

kodi,
I love Werther's butterscotch candies but I love the chewy ones even more than the hard ones!

Moo, what a memory you've given me! I used to love McIntosh toffee when I was a kid. I haven't thought of it for years.

Moo, thanks for bringing this thread to the top.
I love McIntosh so much, but haven't had it for years. Do you think it's still the same? It's got to be hard so I can smash it to pieces.

Goddess, I don't think I've even tried the chewy ones. I'm so addicted to the hard ones.

Nothing has changed since the original post.. still addicted to Werthers, and still trying to lose the 5 pounds.

The last time - and it was really the last time - I chewed on
McIntosh toffee the incredible suction pulled out a crown
causing my dentist to smile but me, not so much. However,
thanks for the memories prior to the uncrowning!

Heres another fan of Werthers and McIntosh toffees. What about the Werthers toffees wrapped in chocolate ? I didn't like them at first (too much of a purist) but couldn't leave the bag just sitting there, uneaten....

kodi, around Christmas you can often find Werther's in nice cans to give as gifts or keep to hold your stash throughout the year. I discovered this when I had an elderly aunt who loved her Werther's!

I gave my husband a large bag of Werther's last year for our Werther's can and it turned out to be a combination of hard and soft. We kept eating them to decide which we preferred but never quite came to a decision and I haven't seen a bag like it since. I keep looking!

I'm having a nostalgic craving for McIntosh toffee now for some reason and wonder if the old red boxes are still available. I've discovered that you can get 170 gram bags with individually wrapped pieces but that spoils the fun of smashing them to bits yourself!

Another favourite is Walkers Butterscotch toffee with brazil nuts imbedded within. Yum ! And you can also freeze it and smash the packet to get shards and pieces.

moolyn,
I bet you can get those red McIntosh toffees at Sugar Mountain. Next time I'm by there (though I try to stay away because I'm addicted to coconut marshmallows), I'll look for you.

Oh you guys!! I'm about ready to reach up into the top shelf for my stash. And I'm trying so hard not to.

Mathieu, what a great idea to freeze it.
And I think I'll have to continue to sample the toffees wrapped in chocolate.. Most likely, I'll have to sample a whole bag.

Moo, I bet the tins are great. They really would make a nice gift.

Goddess, where is Sugar Mountain, and do I really want to know?

Tonight is the night... 2 Werthers before bed.

Thanks for suggesting Sugar Mountain, goddess. I hadn't heard of them before. I emailed them to ask about McIntosh toffee. Not that I really need the red-boxed slabs myself but I'd like to get as much of the bagged pieces as possible for our Maui exhcange buddies!

Do you mean marshmallow pieces covered in toasted coconut? I used to buy ten cents worth out of my twenty-five cent allowance every week at Zellars for a couple of years until everyone started doing it and they raised the price. That was lots of marshmallows because they were so light. I was pretty light back in those days myself!

kodi, next time you come for a visit I'll show you my Werther's tin. I got an even nicer one for my aunt.

Guess what, I'm eating a toasted coconut donut right now, with a steaming cup of mint tea on the side. I love toasted coconut too.

Kodi and Moolyn, let me know when you'll be leaving and returning from your respective trips. This will help me in setting some dates for the mini GTG/Russian/Czech/trip review (with photos) we spoke of. I'd really like to organise/host this. It will have to be in the New Year as December is too busy with all the seasonal events going on. And it will be nice to have something to look forward to in early 2010.
I'll then co-ordinate details with Moolyn who will distribute an invitation to the group at large.

Mathieu, I'm not sure if I have your email address, but I leave on Jan 16 til the end of Feb.

Speaking of marshmallow, I love those bananas and the strawberries that come in a bag. You can buy them almost anywhere.

Oh Mathieu, did you save one for me? Those are the ones, Moo -- covered in toasted coconut!

I love any kind of marshmallow candy. Near where I went to university in NJ (Rutgers) there was a small, grungy Sears store and at their candy counter they sold marshmallows covered in a thin coating of caramel. Heaven!!! And I've never seen them anywhere else.

McIntosh Toffee Quest, Part 1

Thursday morning I drove to the huge Walmart Super Store on Eglington East near Warden Avenue. I asked the greeter where to find candy and she pointed me to the far end of the store. It turned out to be specially packaged Christmas Candy and I couldn't find McIntosh Toffee among any of the festive offerings.

Another clerk directed me back to the other side of the store to the Food Section. I did find the toffee there but only one full bag plus a broken one. None of the clerks was willing to check for more stock in the back because it wasn't their department.

Finally, one helpful clerk checked the box and said he knew where to find it and to follow him. He sped off and I had no choice but to make my way through the hoards of shoppers after him, even when I realized he was heading back to the Christmas Candy Section. When I caught up and told him I'd already checked this area, he insisted on looking himself before agreeing to check for me in the back. So back we headed to the far side of the store. No luck; it was out of stock but an order was on the way.

So I bought the solitary bag for $2.17 plus tax, a total of $2.45.

Well, sadly the search continues, Moo. I just called Sugar Mountain and they don't carry it.

McIntosh Toffee Quest, Part 2

Sugar Mountain didn't respond to my email so I called them too, goddess, and discovered that they don't carry it, even though I was told that many people ask for it. I suggested that the girl I spoke with ask her manager to order it and she responded that she just might do that.

Did anyone know that McIntosh-Toffee is the name of a poster on an "adult" website?

Friday morning I drove to the Walmart just north of Sherway Gardens in Missisauga. I ignored the Christmas candy and headed straight to the regular candy section and Voila: eleven bags were waiting there fo me! I bought them all and have enough for our American exchange partners as well as as few for stocking stuffers!

So my McIntosh Toffee Quest has a happy ending!
