Vancouver clothing advice

We are heading to the Olympics. We're only going to indoor events in Vancouver (ice skating). I see that temps look like 30s and 40s...and rain. Any thoughts... Is it better to bring a long down coat or a shorter parka? Other suggestions regarding shoes/boots? We're from California, so although these temperatures sound warm to some people, we don't have much in the way of winter attire.

Layering is the way to go in Vancouver. A warm sweater under a rain jacket. You don't need a parka or down coat. Wear sensible shoes as you could get your feet wet if you are going to do a lot of walking. The temperatures should probably be more in the high 40's to low 50's in the city. You will be indoors for the events so you don't want to overdress. It is more like San Francisco in the rain.

And an umbrella might help.

Down is a very poor idea in our climate even worse than cotton or leather.

I wouldn't go with down, not great in our rainy weather. Stick with a thin layer like fleece and then a waterproof jacket (gortex or something) on top. The key is you want to stay dry but not too hot! rain boots are also a great idea, you'll be much more comfy if you're dry!

Prepare for rain and temperatures in the 40's and 50's, not snow. Wearing down or a parka in Vancouver right now would be like wearing a wet blanket or a mattress. Not recommended and it's not cold enough for that. As previously mentioned, if you're familiar with San Francisco, dress for a San Francisco winter.

This morning I saw frost outside for the first time in what seems like weeks. So although it's not what I call cold, I think 40s to 50s might be a bit optimistic, at least all the time.
