Hi willit, I've just posted some of my favorite Vancouver area pictures if you want to take a look. If you like gardens, both of the gardens shown will be in glorious bloom at the end of April.

Some gorgeous photos there sundriedtopepo. After much head scratching, guide book reading, forum browsing and map studying - I'm still confused - but we have a plan.
After spending a week in Vancouver itself, we are going to go to Victoria for the day, hire a car and take a slow drive up to Ucluelet, stay 4 nights then return via another night in Victoria before spending the final couple of days back in Vancouver itself.

If you have not booked your accommodation yet, go to the groupon site and you can get a one bedroom suite, full kitchen, for $199 for two nights mid week at Waters Edge resort in Ucluelet You can double it up for the four night. Its a great deal, we are doing it ourselves. If you call the resort directly they will match the price.

Sounds good willit. Sorry my photos are not really oriented to the tourist sights, just pics I took on our walks etc.
I would consider returning via Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay, which is very pretty, and from there it is not a far drive to Whistler. Beautiful mountain scenery, quite often there is some sort of thing going on there.
Between Horseshoe Bay and Whistler there is also a newly opened tram which goes up the mountain we call the Chief, a challenge to climb, but now you can whizz to the top in a tram. It's called Sea to Sky, and has wonderful views from the top.
If you like that sort of thing, in Whistler you can go on a tram that takes you between two mountain peaks:

Also, just for your information, Ucluelet is much smaller than Tofino. There are more services and restaurants in Tofino, and the long beaches are closer. We stayed at the Black Rock in Ucluelet, got a deal there. It has a lovely setting, on the water, rocky though, not sandy at that location.
Zebec just posted a great TR here, of his/her trip to the West Coast:
