US Driver's Permit Valid?
Our family will be driving through Canada this summer, and my 15-year old wants to know if he will be able to drive there on his state of Maine driver's permit? Anyone know or know how to find out?

So far as I know all foreign Driving Permits & Licenses are valid in Canada for people visiting here. But you may be talking about what we call a 'Learner's License' which may well be a different kettle of fish. If however it is not a Learner's Permit you have no need to worry.
And by the way theladyjess, why would you call the Maine DOL to find out if a driver's license is valid somewhere else? Wouldn't it make more sence to contact the province(s) where he is going to get a definative answer?

A drivers license issued by any state is valid, but a permit is not a license.
Best bet is to acquire an official answer. Most provinces have official websites with an 800 number, which would get you (or your son) started.

Hi:
You'll have to check with each location your going to visit in Canada. But here in Ontario visitors need to be at least 16 & have a valid drivers license. Also, Ontario has a 'graduated' license system so new Ontario drivers need to have a license for 12 months & then get retested before they can drive on '400 series' highways (Ontario's equivalent to the Interstates) but I'm sure how that applies to new out-of-province drivers.
