TORONTO TO NIAGRA FALLS

Hi all,

I will be in Toronto in July and would like to take a day trip to Niagra Falls. I will not be renting a car while I am there, so I want to use a tour company for this. Which tour company do you recommend?

Thanks,
Kathy

Hi Kathy

I took a bus that left from the downtown bus terminal. I would recommend that instead of a tour you can leave when you want. There are departures throughtout the day. It was at the Greyhound bus terminal but it was a local bus company not Greyhound that actually takes you to Niagara.

Thanks Lid.
Now can you tell me what you did once you got there as far as getting around Niagra Falls is concerned. Where is the Bus Station in relationship to the rest of the city?

Hi Kathy

I don't know if you are aware that there is a casino in Niagara Falls. You will have tourists wanting to see the falls and people wanting to go to the casino. There are two stops, the first one is where most tourists get off (where I got off the first time I took the bus). From there you take a local bus to take you to city center, if I remember it was maybe a ten minute ride. But this bus ride is not included in your original ticket, I think it was close to $5.00, it's good for the trip back down as well so keep your ticket.

The second stop is right at the Casino which is city center. If you have a Casino card (which you wont since you've never been to Niagara) the bus ride is only $10.00 return (i think) and it drops you off right at the casino which is city center.

What i would suggest and did myself the second time I took the bus is buy the ticket that takes you right to the casino. Even if you don't want to gamble go inside the casino and get the casino card. You will get it instantly. When you are leaving you show the casino card to the bus driver. If you don't have a casino card and want to get on the bus at the casino you have to pay an extra $10.00.

The only condition with doing the second option is you can only stay for the day and you are not allowed any bags. The reasoning is that you are going to the casino for the day.

So basically the casino subsidies the bus trip to get people inside and gambling. And if you do decide to gamble you also get a $10.00 credit once you leave the bus.

Again, thank you. This is all great information that I will use in order to save some money. But now how do I get from the casino to Niagra Falls. We also want to take the Maid of the Mist boat ride and the behind the falls tour. Have you ever done either one of these? Is there public transportation to this area from the casino?
Thanks,
Kathy

Hi Kathy

sorry I should have mentioned the Casino is "right around the corner" from the Falls. Once you get to the Casino you are right there. It is very conveniently located to attract all the tourist, the Planet Hollywood is also right next to the Casino. I was surprised at how small the tourist area around the falls actually is. I did do the Maid of the Mists and a couple of other things. I usually keep all sorts of little pieces of paper while travelling, I will go thru the stuff tonight and give you prices if it includes it. I went last Sept. so can't imaging the prices changing too much.

Again thank you. This is really great to know. When you find information and prices about the Maid of the Mist and other tours in the area please let me know. Also is the casino pretty much the same as casino's are here in the U.S.? What other tours and attractions are there in the area?

Thanks,
Kathy

Hi Kathy

About the casino, I actually live in Vancouver so can't compare with the US. But don't expect Vegas, its not on that grand of a scale. It is nice three levels, big but I'm just a slot machine gambler. I liked it because you know there are going to be ATM machines in there and you don't have to look far for a bathroom.

No I didn't expect a Vegas casino. I live in Wisconsin, and we have casinos all over the place here. It sounds like our Wisconsin casino's compare to the Niagra casino. They are nice enough, but not on the scale of a Vegas casino. Thanks again for all the information. Let me know about other tourist attractions in Niagra Falls.

Lid or whoever else might know,

When I'm in Niagra I want to go to the casino, do the behind the falls tour, go on the maid of the mist, go on the spanish aero car, and take a ride up the skylon tower. Is public transportation readily available in this area like it is in Toronto? Will visiting all these attractions be possible without renting a car?

Thanks,
Kathy

Hi Kathy

sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday. I can't seem to find my Niagra Falls box.

There is no need at all to rent a car unless you are going to spend a few days in the region and venture to Niagara on the Lake area.

All the attractions around the Falls are all close to each other.

I did the Maid of the Mist, highly recommend it. You get a garbage bag like poncho to wear but your hair will still get wet.

The only thing on your list I didn't do was go up the Skylon Tower.

You buy your tickets at the Visitor Center for the Maid of the Mist. We bought a ticket for the People Mover, which is a bus that goes around the different attractions like the floral sun clock, takes you to the Spanish aero car, you can stay as long as you want at each attraction. Its basically a hop on hop off bus.

I can't remember but I think we bought the people mover and chose to do the Spanish Aero Car but can't remember what the other choice was.

I assume you will be in Toronto? Go to Eaton Center, inside there is a Visitors Information Center and they will have all sorts of maps, brochures for all of Ontario. We got a brochure on Niagara Falls and there were a few coupons for the attractions that we did.

Lidd,
Thank you so much for all of the information regarding visiting Niagra Falls. You are so insightful. I was thinking about taking the grayline tour to Niagra, but after hearing from you I've changed my mind. You make going on a bus and spending the day there sound so delightful. I will be in Toronto for a week in July. If there is anything you can tell me about Toronto please post it or email me.

Thanks again,
Kathy

Thanks, I'll make sure I see that too. Is there anything else I shouldn't miss?

Hi

While I think bus tours are good it really isn't necessary in Niagara Falls.

A funny little story, well except my boyfriend doesn't find it funny.

He went to the Falls in 1996 and took a bus tour. They had how ever much free time at the falls and were to meet back at the bus at a certain time. Well the entire bus tour were on the bus waiting for the tour guide who didn't appear for an hour and a half. Apparently she had streached out on a grass patch and fallen asleep.

My boyfriend had tickets for the hockey game that night back in Toronto was not amused this woman made the tour an hour and a half longer than expected.

I'm in no way saying this could happen to you. I just found it funny and typical of my boyfriends luck. How dare he go to the Falls without me!

The Falls really are best seen on your own pace, to linger where you want to and walk by whatever doesn't interest you.

Right near the Spanish Aero car there is a snack bar, I had a great ice cream cone there.

Thanks again for all the information. On a map that I seen of the Niagra Falls area the Spanish Aero Car looks like it is quite a distance from the Maid of the mist and the Casino. Is this correct?

Thanks,
Kathy
