Sylvia Hotel, Vancouver
Has anyone stayed in this hotel in Vancouver? If so, grateful for any information as e are thinking of booking it for 6 days of a 3 week trip to Canada. We are quite keen to get kitchen facilities in our room so we can make lunches etc to take on walks. This hotel has a double with kitchen for CAD 135 per night which is the cheapest I can find for August!
Thanks

Hi Maria,

A friend recently recommended the Sylvia to me as a good place to stay, but I haven't stayed there myself. Have you looked at the Oceanside Hotel (very near the Sylvia)? It's an apartment building converted into a hotel, and every room has a kitchenette. We are staying there in April for $100 Cdn, not sure what summer rates are. My friend has actually stayed at the Oceanside.

Maria: I have stayed at this hotel on several occasions, although it's been a number of years now. It definitely has a style unlike the modern concrete and steel highrises you typically see in cities. Also, it has a terrific location overlooking English Bay, on the edge of Stanley Park, and right in the heart of the West End with its good shopping, and restaurants. I never had a kitchen facility, so I can't comment on this, but the restaurant was nice, although, as mentioned, you will many, many restaurant choices in that location. I think you will be pleased with your choice.

www.sylviahotel.com is the website.

The Sylvia Hotel at one point a long time ago used to be the tallest building in Vancouver. The exterior is made of bricks, and half of it is covered in ivy. It's right across the street from English Bay. All you have to do is cross the street and you're on the beach! The Sylvia is also right at the foot of Denman Street which is a road full of ethnic restaurants and unique shops. It's also at the entrance to Stanley Park, and a 5-10 minute walk to the popular Robson Street.

Maria, over the years the Sylvia's acquired somewhat legendary status with those of us in Seattle who travel to Vancouver regularly. Here's my version, based on a number of stays -
The hotel is old, and some of the rooms bespeak their age and the fact that the Sylvia keeps rates low by not offering all the bells and whistles. And, because it's heavily booked, asking for a different room if yours is a bit threadbare may not meet with success: they won't have any others.
BUT...
The Sylvia meets the what we call the "three rules of real estate value" - location, location, and location. If your room faces English Bay you will have a hotel room view hard to match anywhere on Earth. Within easy walking distance of the Sylvia are many of the most attractive visitor attractions in Vancouver. There are cafes, bars, restaurants, cinemas, shops, all manner of fun things to do and consume, within yards of the Sylvia. Lots of good street life. Seabirds squawking and once I saw a bald eagle fly by on its way to Stanley Park. For C$135 with a kitchen I say go for it. Try to get them to commit to a bay-facing room, though.
