Suggestions for routes Quebec City-Gasoe and interesting places

Message:
We are planning a trip to the province of Quebec about mid-September and input from people who live there or have experienced Quebec city and north would be appreciated. We lived in Montreal for many years and fifty years ago we honeymooned at Peak O Dawn in Perce, Gaspe, during the trial of Wilbur Coffin who has executed for the murder of three American sportsmen. I believe this case has been ressurected.

We live in Toronto and look for interesting driving route(s) to the Gaspe from Quebec City, and some off-the-beaten tourist track places to visit. Experiences are as important as places to see. I like fishing villages, village squares where one can sit for hours watching the world go by. Nature is good and history ranks high. Not so interested in commercial presentations for tourists. Here?s our plan so far.

1. A few days in Montreal. No need for info here.
2. Quebec City. Any off the beaten track suggestions?
3. We will not go into the US.
4. Ferries?
5. North shore places?

Time about 10 days or less from Montreal.
Motels, inns would be helpful from Quebec City.
What would the foliage (colours) be like in mid-September?
Weather at that time of year.
Light hiking (seniors in 70s)
Special park areas of interest with accommodations.

Gaspe? Any special helpful information about routes, accommodations, etc. helpful. Apart from Quebec Tourism, can you recommend some other websites.

Thanks.

While in Québec City, spend some time on the Ile d'Orléans, and then follow the North Shore through the Charlevoix. On the way you can visit the National Historic Site and the Irish Memorial at Grosse Ile (there is a ferry from the Ile d'Orléans, but you can also reach it by ferry from the south shore at Berthier-sur-Mer and from the Old Port in Québec). You may want to stop for the night at Baie Saint Paul or La Malbaie. In the Charlevoix, there's nice hiking for all levels in the Grands-Jardins provincial park Continue to Tadoussac at the mouth of the Saguenay and then to Les Escoumins, from where you can take the ferry across to Trois-Pistoles.

On your way to Gaspé, don't miss the Reford Gardens (Jardins de Métis) at Grand-Métis.

Returning to Québec on the south shore, take route 132 along the river (not the Autoroute, unless you are pressed for time), stopping at places such as Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies and Saint-Jean-Port-Joli. If you are stopping in Quebec again on the way back, take the ferry from Lévis to Québec. It's worth it for the view alone.

Laverendrye

I've tracked your suggestions and they look interesting. If time is short, what portions might we use the autoroute(s) without losing too much. Probably to and from Quebec City.

Are you familiar with the city or town of Gaspe? We would go on in any event to Perce.

Gaspé is attractive enough, but I would stay in Percé.

Certainly take either autoroute between MOntréal and Québec, 40 on the north shore or 20 on the south.
