Stop over Lake George NY to Quebec city?

Folks,

Leaving Lake George late in the day (5:00PM) on a summer Sunday driving towards Quebec City. Looking for a place to stay the night, have a good dinner a few hours (2-3) away. Outskirts of Montreal, perhaps or other recommendations. If the border crossing is time consuming, then a bit closer, I assume.

Thanks.

We cross from Canada at Stanstead Vermont all the time and its nil border time. Newport Vermont is 5 minutes away and there are many hotels there. Last ski trip, we stayed at the Newport City hotel and it was fine. Not luxury but adequate for a road trip. We ate herehttp://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_Review-g57335-d4830976-Reviews-The_Eastside_Restaurant_Pub-Newport_Northeast_Kingdom_Vermont.html Quebec City will be about 2 to 3 hours away in the morning.

If you want to stay near Montreal but don't want to drive into the city, you might want to consider Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, a small city just outside Montreal, and just off route 15. We stayed at the Auberge Harris last year and found it quite clean and comfortable, with a nice heated outdoor pool. Saint Jean has a small but fun downtown with a handful of good restaurants, and if you want to dine in Montreal, it's less than a half hour away.
