rail trip across canada

i have seen some ads for trans canada-rail tours. I want a westbound summer tour that leaves in july or aug from montreal or toronto and goes to vancover via the rockies. It should be about 8-12 days. If anyone has had any experience here please let me know. Thanks in advance.

If you are a train travel buff it's one of the classics. Check ViaRail's website. I guess it's www.viarail.com or .ca

You might consider an escorted tour and if you've got the $$$ by all means choose Brendan Tours. Leaving from Toronto on VIA, first class to Jasper, then bus tour through the Rockies to Vancouver. Extremely well done, top hotels, great meals and awesome scenery. Our best trip ever!!

John I took this trip on Via Rail (and some Amtrak) I left from Pittsburgh, went to NYC, Then to Montreal - then across Canada to Vancouver (then down to Seattle). It was the most fantastic trip I have ever been on. First of all, it really showed me how much Amtrak SUCKS!. Via Rail was excellent, The food was good, the views were great, the people were great. I'm a bit of an adventurer, so I didn't have a berth, and got on and got off quite frequently all across Canada. I met alot of great people while crossing the country. The scenery was stunning! This was the trip of a lifetime. Do it while you can, my friend!

If you want to do a "tour" on your own schedule and interests, check into the rail pass option. It lets you get on and off the train wherever and whenever you want (within certain limits). The actual travel time from Toronto to Vancouver is only 4 days, so you could get off and explore on your own in several different places if you want. (Jasper is the most popular.)

You do still need to reserve, though. Esp. in the summer season.
