Questions about Niagara Falls

My wife and I are travelling to NF, Canadian side. We are staying at the Marriot Fallsview. We are receiving a dinner voucher and free breakfast. Has anyone ever eaten there, if so how is the food??? The restaurant is called the Terrapin Grille. Are there any other good places to eat for either lunch or dinner that we should not miss??? Besides the usual attrations is there anything different and unique that we should not miss??? We will be there 9/24 - 9/28. Thanks so much.

The casino is worth a visit!
Travel also to Niagara-on-the-Lake a lovely "period" town along the river

Hi, We stayed at the same hotel. It was a pleasure. The Terrapin Grille had good food but the voucher really doesn't cover the cost of dinner. We found it to be expensive - the voucher helped but you'll still have to shell out some bucks. We wanted wine etc. with our dinner. The brunch was really nice - lots of selection fresh friut, bacon and eggs, omletes made to order etc. The Terrapin Grille overlooks the falls and the view is beautiful after dark with the falls illumination. The shuttle to the Casino is free so we used it for transportation downtown even if we weren't going to the casino. I enjoyed the Hershey chocolate shop which is right near the casino. We also had an awesome early morning walk along the falls. The Niagara parks commission has limited development near the actual falls, and you can walk quite a distance and enjoy the view. As for restaurants - well you're pretty much stuck with chains. You could try the chowhound website www.chowhound.com for some more ideas in that regard.

Thank you lolly for the info. For dinner is the Terrapin Grille dressy or is casual allowed??? Plus so far it looks like rain a number of days we will be there, any good indoor attractions.

The Terrapin Grill is quite elegant. Even so, you'll see patrons in shorts and sandals. The food is just fine, though certainly not memorable, and very pricey. The best dining spots in the falls area are the Parks Commission (they have a website) restaurants, all with terrific views and excellent value "early bird" menus. Especially nice is the outdoor deck at Victoria Falls, particularly if you time your reservation for 1/2 before sunset. If you're into fine dining, or moderately priced excellent dining, head for Niagara-on-the-Lake, chock full of terrific fine dining (see www.niagaraonthelake.com). Best of the best, and only a 1/2 hour drive, and definitely worth the drive and the tariff, is On the Twenty (they have a website, too). There are also lots of wonderful dining destinations in nearby St. Catharine's.

The Marriott is a relitively new Hotel and the prices reflect that. There are a number of restaurants in the area, from chain, casual, fine dining and fast food. Directly across the street from the Marriott is the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel. They're dining room is MUCH more affordable, the food just as good if not better, and the view just as spectacular.

Mark, my best suggestion is to definitely walk over the bridge to the American side and view the falls from there. You can stand at the railing where the water drops and it is an empowering and unique experience (you see the falls in their entirety and from a distance on the Canadian side - also spectacular). For a few hours away from the falls, I suggest Old Fort Niagara on the American side...about a 10 minute drive from the American falls. The fort is a fabulous piece of American history. Check out www.oldfortniagara.org (or .com - not sure). I highly recommend it. Have a great time.

Mark, you've got 4 days to enjoy the area and if you can, take a drive to Niagara on the lake. It's lovely this time of year and you can always dine, stroll, visit some wineries and local shops...bring your umbrella.
I've stayed at the Fallsview, great views of the falls, sorry I can't comment on the Terrapin, but heard it was great with beautiful views.
I'll be going back in October.Have fun.
