The old city in Quebec City is quite compact, I don't think a guide is necessary. Order one of the free guide books from bonjourquebec.com, it will give you all the information you need for exploring the city, including maps, historic sites, hotels, etc.

We took a walking tour this summer and highly enjoyed it. We picked it up from the tourist information booth across from the Chateau Frontenac - I think they left twice a day. We also took a horse and buggy tour (daughter insisted)and while we had expected it to be more of the same, the two tours were very different. We are not normally "tour" people and like to travel and explore on our own so were pleasantly surprised....probably depends a lot on the guide however....

Thanks Kamark,
I had actually read about the horse and buggy rides and was curious about this. Was this actually a tour, where the driver actually told you about the sights? Or was it basically just a ride?

My husband and I also like to walk and explore on our own. And I have a pretty good guide book with walking tours in it. But I find I see more, and enjoy more if I have a decent guide to give an overview rather than walking around with my nose in the book trying to read about the buildings. I also enjoy specialty tours (culinary tours, architectural) so if anyone had any experiences of this sort I'd be interested.

The driver on the horse and buggy ride
was full of information - lots of anecdotes that we wouldn't have picked up otherwise - if you wanted to do both maybe the walking tour in the day and the horse and buggy tour at night after dinner - the city is quite pretty at night all it up and I understand they are really lighting up the city for the anniversary but I'm not sure when that will be done.
I wouldn't know which tour to recommend if you wanted to just do one as they really were both very enjoyable. It would depend on the guide...
