It was by far the worst 5 star claiming hotel my wife and I had ever stayed. First and foremost it did not deserve the Ritz name. Ripped sheets in the bed, water stained table tops in the bedroom, old, out dated furnishings. Rude service, poor food presentation and quality from Room service. Beware! This is not the Ritz Carlton many of you are familiar with from around the world. I have stayed at many Ritz Carlton's and this one does not warrant it's name.

Sorry to hear that! I had a diasppointing stay at Montreal's Intercontinental a couple of months ago. It's a shame that such a marvelous city and such usually excellent hotel chains are having trouble maintaining their standards

I think it's just the Ritz, which has changed hands many times over the last few years.

Donna is right. The Ritz in Montreal, for years, has been going downhill. Soon, it will be an overpriced dump. Sadly, folks book through AmEx expecting luxury for the low rate, only to find a shabby rendition of what used to be a fabulous hotel. On our last visit, the downstairs piano bar was closed. There, just closed. Go figure.

My wife and I just had a very poor experience at the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia. Maybe the Ritz chain is just going downhill.

Let me jump on the bandwagon. I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton St. Louis in October for the first time in several years. The service was excellent but the facility was starting to show some wear. <BR>I'm going to Montreal next weekend and have decided to stay at the Marriott after reading less than glowing reviews of the Intercontinental and Ritz-Carlton there.

Try the Hotel Le Germain on rue Mansfield,right off of Sherbrooke,about 2 blocks from the Omni and the Ritz.It is a luxurious boutique hotel,first class attentive service,large rooms,down comforters,great concierge..www.hotelgermain.com ...it is so much better than these old fashioned stuffy hotels with their faded pretentions.

I've been reading many good things in this forum about the Loews Vogue, and am seriously considering altering my Ritz reservations after reading about some of your experiences. How would any of you that have stayed in both (the Ritz and Vogue) compare the two?

I was doing some research on hotels in the Montreal-area for an upcoming trip & THe Ritz-carlton isn't even in the AAA tour book. There was a note that it did not meet the AAA standards, which I thought was surprising since it was the Ritz, but I guess I'm not too surprised now. We're looking into the Marriott. Steve, did you fill out a comment form or did you let someone know -- I would definitely make them aware of this, so they can quickly improve to live up to their name!!

It is interesting that both Fodors and Frommers still recommend the Ritz in their books. After now reading all the negative comments, I'm nervous about trusting their reviews. I have always found Fodors analysis of things to be pretty accurate.Hopefully, this is just one goof!

If the Queen Elizabeth is still there (4 years since I've been there) it is an outstanding hotel in a perfect loacation.

Wow, it doesn't sound like a case of "The Princess and the Pea" here at all. When I first saw the title of the post, I was thinking that "I'll know when I've arrived..." when I can not only stay at the Ritz, but say it was a dump. LOL! But I'm convinced by the consensus here that this is a place with some problems. Thanks for the heads up, folks!

I have stayed at many Ritz throughout the world but this Montreal Ritz Carlton is absolutely a dump. I was upset enough at the dumpy, sex-motel-like atmosphere of this place to send a complaint to their coporate office. SHAME ON YOU RITZ CARLTON for keeping this sh*tty place to ruin your wonderful name.
