Niagra Falls Info
Can anyone tell me if early to mid Octiber is s good time to visit Niagra especially in terms of fall foliage? Is it bitter cold then? Less crowded?

Also, we are a little hesiatant about where to stay and would prefer to stay as close to or at, Niagra Falls as possible , but have read that it is very Las Vegasy etc.,which is not our cup of tea, but we would only be staying 2 nights. We would want a reliable, very clean, safe accomodation. Has anyone stayed at the Marriott at the Falls? Any feedback on any of these topics would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!

Tehre are two marriotts. One at the top of the cliffs that border the city, and another, the Marriott Courtyard, in the middle of the action.
I was in NF a few weeks ago, and the tacky part is not all that taccky, and is fun for a few hours. There's a new, expensive Hilton, and a new, expensive Sheraton (plus a couple of other Sheraton hotels in town) to pick from, too.
The casiono keeps NF busy all the time, but October wonb't be too crowded, and, unless you're from Trinidad or some other really hot place, it will not be too cold.

The best thing to do in NF is take the Maid of the Mist boat trip to the bottom of the falls. It's about $11 Canadian, and wonderful. They give you raincoats, so you won't get wet.

To move up a notch away from tackiness, check out the town of Niagara on the Lake, about half an hour by car down river from NF. Live theatre, excellet restaurants, first class small hotels, vineyards and wineries to visit, and more.
BAK

I've been trying to find information about the Falls in November, and wanted to take the Maid of the Mist ... but from what I read it isn't running then. Does anyone know about this?? Also I got the impression from the guide book that the jet boat trip to the whirlpool from Niagara on the lake doesn't run in November either. Any info on this??

Going in November isn't really what I would have planned but I did want to see some scenery on my trip from Toronto to Rochester. Incidentally, how long does it take to drive from Toronto to Rocherster??

Thank you

Cheryl, I agree with BAK....stay in NOTL
We like Oban Inn but friends always stay @ Queen's Landing. I find Pillar & Post & The Prince of Wales too 'overdone' if you know what I mean. It's a short drive
to Niagara Falls from NOTL so you can do the NF stuff during the day & come back
to NOTL @ night. Check out the Shaw Festival (George Bernard Shaw) in NOTL
I hear "She Loves Me" is wonderful!!
I go to Niagara about once a year. Some great things not to miss are the Butterfly Conservatory (half-way between the falls and Niagara-On-The-Lake), wine tours are still operating at this time. The "tourist" traps along Lunday's Lane are very expensive, but the Maid of the Mist is def. something you don't want to miss out on.

Katie - Maid of the Mist likely does not run in November due to the cold temperatures. I would guess that it runs May to October.

We visit NF about four times a year. We either stay in a B&B on River Road or venture to Niagara on the Lake. Both are beautiful. NF is great for action and fun. Clifton Hill houses many museums i.e. Ripleys Believe it or Not, Wax museums, Guiness Book etc. There are also many gift shops and restaurants. The Casino has taken over as one of the main attractions. In agreement with what others have mentioned above - Niagara-on-the-lake is very beautiful. I stayed at a B&B in November and the temperatures were mild. Although it isn't a pretty time of year, the 'town' is decorated with lights and has the charm of a village. I would highly recommend catching a play at the Shaw Festival there. I would consider this area to be much more quiet and quaint. There is quite a bit of info on the web with regard to activities in both of these areas.

Have a wonderful time.

The weather can vary widely from year to year. This October was lovely. Last October was freezing cold and rainy--very rainy. November is usually cold and we usually have a snowfall by Nov. 30.

I actually love the rather gothic feel of N.F. USA when it's cold and abandoned and the trees are down.

As for accomodations, do stay at Niagara on the Lake or an outlying B&B if you don't like crowds.

I'd be surprised if you could find two days worth of things to do in N.F. if you're not a gambler. Do the Maid, hike the gorge and that's about it.

Btw, watch your wallet!! It's pickpocket heaven.

Another vote for Niagra on the Lake. We go there for four nights for the Shaw Festival and stay at the delightful little Moffat Inn on the main street. It has a sofa and gas fireplace in each room. The town is delightful and the fairly short drive back and forth to the Falls is very scenic, but I can't imagine that you'd drive it more than once. You'd want to stay more in the pretty town.

Cheyl,

I believe that Maid of the Mist shuts down from early to mid October, depending on the weather. The crowds should be minimal in November. There are endless places to stay and it really depends on what you want spend. Sheraton on the Falls is one of the premier hotels in town and has an incredible view of the falls. You can watch the falls illumination from your balcony. Off peak it should run about 249can for a room with a view of the falls. We have also stayed at the Quality Inn Fallsway, about a block away, and paid 80can. There are also about eight B&B's on River Road that are very reasonable and only about a mile or so from the falls.
Niagara Falls is one of our favorite places to visit and I am sure you will enjoy it regardless of when you go.

Have fun!

Niagara is great all year round. We aare from Pittsburgh and visit frequently. We went once after a blizzard, there were 20 inches of snow on the ground, and the place was desserted, and I loved it. Of course the falls were still spectacular. We stayed at the Marriott. Two days there was no view at all because it started to snow. Not a problem because we still had our fireplace, jacuzzi and room service. The rates are lower then too! We will be returning at the end October. Niagara can be as tacky or elegant as you choose. Just be selective in your intinerary.
