niagara falls and/or niagara on the lake hotel/B&B recommendations, please!
Hi,
DH and I are hoping to visit the Niagara Falls area in the beginning of June for an extended weekend.
Have looked at the Marriott Fallsview for a night or 2 potentially but would like to stay at a less expensive hotel or B&B for the additional nights.
have read up on NOTL which sounds like a great place to stay as well.
we are hoping to stay in the range of $150 +/- per night and would like suggestions.
thanks so much!

I think that NOTL is the best place to stay. You can take a beautiful drive up the parkway (or bike) and take a picnic on the way. You can visit the falls and walk around but I think NOTL has a lot more charm than the Falls area.
There are many B&Bs online and if you put NOTL in the search here you will come up with lots of suggestions.
Have fun and do visit some wineries while in the area.

I agree with irec about staying in NOTL but book early. The previews for the Shaw Festival start in April and lodging gets booked up very quickly. You might want to look at the Shaw Festival website -- maybe you can get a theatre/lodging package. It's a good festival.

Here's an excerpt from my trip report discussing our B&B, the Cairngorm on River Road (http://www.cairngorm-niagara.com/).
"I had exhaustively researched the B&Bs/small inns on both sides and decided to stay on the Canadian side. We’re glad we did. It was more central to the activities we had planned, we could walk to the falls, and it was very scenic.
The Cairngorm is an excellent B&B. The manager, Annette Johnson, lives on site and is very friendly and helpful. This 2 story home is just 18 years old and was specifically built to be a B&B. It’s beautiful inside. The 4 rooms are all upstairs.
We stayed in the Garden Suite, featuring a King size bed in a large room, refrigerator, TV, private and large bath, and a large covered balcony with a table and chairs overlooking the gorge where the Niagara River flows after tumbling over the Falls. The balcony is shared with 3 other rooms but there are privacy dividers.
Breakfast is served in the room at a time of your choosing and enjoyed there or on the balcony. The breakfast is fairly healthy and fairly similar each morning. You get a dish of yogurt with oats, homemade breads (they change from day to day), bagels, fresh fruit, and juice, coffee or tea. The china is a cut above. In fact, Annette served breakfast on a different set of china each of our 3 mornings. Again, this is a classy place. There’s more than enough food, too. In fact, we saved some of the breads and spreads (jams, butter and peanut butter) and ate them for a picnic lunch.
There are many B&Bs along River Road, which parallels the Niagara River. The Cairngorm is the one closest to the Falls/downtown area which greatly adds to its appeal. It’s about a 10 minute walk (downhill) to the American Falls and about a 20 minute walk to the Horseshoe Falls."

A couple of thoughts. You mentioned an "extended weekend". The big hotels often have better prices on Sunday and weekday nights and sometimes even, depending on how busy they are, on Friday nights (compared to Saturdays). NOTL is a lovely little town at the far end of the Niagara Parkway (scenic drive along the river between the Falls and NOTL). It's also in the heart of Niagara Wine Country with many wineries to visit - tours and tastings and a few offer exceptional dining. NOTL also has a wide choice of good dining and many little shops - more "adult-oriented" than the Falls. I've stayed at a number of B&B's and have found all acceptable. Price tends to reflect proximity (walking distance) to the main part of town and the theatres in addition to room size and amenities. Take a look at http://www.bba.notl.on.ca/
