need itinerary help with northern NS

We will be leaving Halifax on a Monday morning in early September and need to return to Halifax by Thursday afternoon. We are interested in Cabot Trail, Bird Island, Louisburg Fortress, Alexander Graham Bell. Can we spend the 3 nights in Baddeck and cover what we'd like to? Would appreciate any help figuring out an itinerary.

I was getting so discouraged about the distances in my research, I was about to switch to PEI and then discovered it's pretty much closed up by the end of August! How about staying the first night in Iona at Highland Heights Inn which appears to have lovely view of Bras D'or lake...then the next day, tackle Cabot Trail OR Louisburg Fortress, depending on weather...I'm learning no sense driving/hiking Cabot Trail if you're fogged in. Would it make sense to spend a night in Sydney? The Gowrie House sounds wonderful.

If Monday is a pleasant day, drive directly to Louisbourg. You can spend a night there or head towards Baddeck. Spend day two in Baddeck - explore the Museum, etc. Day Three do the trail counterclockwise and spend the night in Mabou or towards Port Hawkesbury. You are about 3 hours from the causeway to the airport.

I would not suggest to stay in Sydney. More of an industrial town, not too nice. Driving the Cabot Trail stay in Ingonish. www.lanternhillandhollow.ca

I think you could probably spend the 3 nights in Baddeck. Ingonish area might be an alternate choice although farther from Louisburg. I've stayed in Ingonish and day-tripped most of the Cabot Trail from here including stops for picnics, beach walks and/or hikes. Have also used Ingonish as a base to do day trips to Baddeck. I've never visited in early September, but have visited a couple of times in late August and have never been completely "fogged in". Maybe just luck. I seem to recall a few days where there was some early morning or late evening fog.
I think your 3 days in Cape Breton will be busy, but pleasantly so. It's a spectacular place, especially the Cabot Trail section through the National Park.

Some of our plans changed; we are able to leave Halifax mid-Sunday afternoon...plan to stop in New Glasgow for dinner as we understand many restaurants are closed on Sunday. Spending Sunday night in a B&B in Egerton; tried to get a place in Antigonish but everything was booked for the opening of St. Frances Xavier University. Monday will head across the causeway and turn left; hope to hike Skyline Trail. Then drive to Cape North for a night in a B&B; looks fairly remote. Tuesday will drive rest of Cabot Trail and then will spend two nights in Sydney, trying to locate for a Wednesday tour of Louisbourg Fortress and the Miner's Museum in Glace Bay. Thursday plan to stop by Alexander Graham Bell museum b/4 driving to Halifax. Certainly open to hearing any suggestions about current version of our itinerary.

If you are near Sydney you might try to see the Men of the Deeps at the Mine Museum. We really enjoyed that show. Also there is something playing at the playhouse near Louisburg. I think we saw Sounds of the Island which is a variety of music you might hear in Cape Breton.
Enjoy your trip!!

Tanya suggests to drive the Cabot Trail counterclockwise. Is this the preferred direction, or is clockwise just as good?

Either way you travel the Cabot Trail it is breathtaking. From Baddeck, the closest route is counterclockwise.
