We plan to make a day trip to Montreal and would like to ask about driving in Montreal and about parking . Any suggestions about sites to visit are welcome

You should probably start at the Tourism Montreal website or consult a guidebook. It's easier to answer questions that are more specific.

I found this site that also shows parking lots for Old Montreal

http://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/eng/accueila.htm

Hopefully that will help.

Montreal is a big city, with lots of interesting neighborhoods. For a day trip, I guess I'd recommend the old city, Notre Dame basilica, and the old port. Later you can walk up thru Chinatown and to St. Catherine St for some dinner and shopping. Typically, Montreal is not as bad as some other cities for driving. We always drive in to our downtown hotel or b&b with not too many problems. However, like any other city, aviod rush hour, and hope there are no construction delays.

One thing to remember about driving in Montreal is that you can't turn right on a red light. It's kind of a pain, even for pedestrians - I find that the drivers are in a rush to turn the corner, so even if the light is green, pedestrians have to be very careful!

Is that only in Montreal that you can't turn right on red, or all of Quebec? (I think you can turn right on red in Ontario/Toronto.)

It was all of Quebec until about two years ago. Now it's only Montreal you can't turn right on red.

If you haven't been before I highly recommend the city bus tour. It is excellent. You see all the highlights of the city. You don't have to worry about traffic, parking etc. We really enjoyed it.
