We are in the preliminary stages of trying to plan a vacation to Nova Scotia in early July. I will be 7 months pregnant (so assuming doctor says it is fine to fly......!). Also, of course, first pregnancy so not sure what condition I will be in and so we want to stick to something fairly safe and flexible.

We would fly into Halifax from Toronto (2hr flight, variety of times, options etc.) and are interested in scenery, festivals and possibly a whale-watching expedition. We had also considered visits to some of the amazing artists that have studios etc. in the area and we both enjoy good food.

In general we enjoy the B&B vs. large hotel type of accommodation. However comfort (air conditioning?) will probably be more of a priority than previous vacations.

We have 7-8 days including the arrival and departure days. On a past vacation we toured PEI and spent a few days on Grand Manan (stopping at Hopewell Rocks en route).

Our usual types of vacations have tended to feature hiking, horseback riding or other activities (or destinations) not particularly suitable for early third trimester so we are at a bit of a loss as to where to start planning, and I apologize for the question being so non-specific.

Any "getting started" information on what to look for, possible destinations or routes and what to definitely avoid given our situation would be appreciated.

I can't help with the specifics for Nova Scotia, but can tell you that I was almost 7 months pregnant for our trip to PEI.
I think the most important factor for me was not being in too remote of a spot, staying hydrated and wearing comfortable and non-slipping shoes when on boats. I found I felt much better for those midmonths than before or in the later part of my pregnancy......with food, smells, fatigue etc. While you won't want to do anything strenous, you will be perfectly fine to walk lots, as long as you can put your feet up occasionally. Your doctor will tell you of any other medical concerns before the trip, but if you are a healthy woman, there is no need for worry.

We had a fantastic Maritimes holiday.....and we had a three year old with us too!

Halifax is a good choice--great hospital and hotels. Try the Prince George or the Halliburton. You might also consider the southern end of the province, around Yarmouth (another regional hospital). Trout Point Lodge or Cooper's Inn are both great.

nkh, whenever we go to Nova Scotia we like to visit Sherbrooke Village which is an actual village rather than a collection of buildings brought from elsewhere. Last time we stayed at the Saint Mary River Lodge, ate an old-fashioned lunch in the village, dined on planked salmon at Lisconbe Lodge and snacked on wonderful smoked salmon from a local smokehouse. If you are thinking of visiting beautiful Cape Breton it would be on your way. There are many antique stores, artists and quaint villages along the coastal drive from Halifax.

definitly spend 3-4 nights in cape breton. take a sail boat ride out of baddeck. the skyline trail is a pretty easy one and definitly doable while pregnant. i love the town of pictou. i stayed at the waverley inn in halifax. nothing fancy but i'd go back.

If you plan on heading towards Sherbrooke Village, spend a couple of days at Wilson's Cove Cottage. It is a small two-bedroom cottage on the water (an I mean on the water). Liscomb Lodge is a mile down the road. The owners have a cottage nearby and the place is clean, clean, clean. I don't think they have a website, but my in-laws have stayed here and it is lovely. Call 752-7665 for more info. Sherbrooke Village is a fifteen minute drive.

I found a website for the Wilson Cove Cottages. It is on Clans Brae website www.clansbrae.ca (attractions) They co-own the rental. Clansbrae is also a lovely B&B to stay and with very gracious hosts.
