Greetings in French ?

Can anyone tell me what a popular greeting in French used in Quebec City - Montreal...would be ?
i thought bonsoir but i'm told this is "good Evening" ..... the greeting i am trying to find out is one that is used day and night, so i couldn't be that....
any ideas.. would be appreciated... oh, and no it is not bonjouir, so its something different, but said often from hotel staff, milk store clerks...everywhere... very common, i just can't remember it ;(
Thanks

Often followed by: "Comment allez vous?" or "Comment ca va?"

"Salut" is very casual, used a lot by younger people to their peers but it has become more popular in the last few years in all other venues.
Can't think of anything else.

Bonjour by day and bonsoir by night will do. After that they will figure you out and likely switch to English!

To greet someone EVEN if it is in the evening , you can say " Bonjour " , sort of like " Hello " , as a parting salutation if it is in the evening " Bonsoir "......

"Bienvenue!" was what totally put me off in Quebec City. As the original meaning is "Welcome!" the Quebecois seem to use it just like we would say "You're welcome" Perhaps you are remembering that! Go buy yourself a quick french phrase dictionary- even if online.

Bonjour= Good Day
Salut= Hi/Hello
Merci= Thank you
Cava?/Cava!= How are things going?/Things are great!
