I'm trying to remember what the Graphic
Arts Building is. It rings a distant bell.

I'll try to find time to remember better tomorrow.

I suspect it's a ;loft / condo conversion of an art deco building, somewhere downtown, where investors have bought units and, unable to rent them on yearly leases, are part of a group renting by the day - week - month.

I sort of think it is on Richmond, near Bay, which puts it in the heart of the downtown financial core.

I'll try to remember to walk by there tomorrow.

BAK

Well, it is not the building I thought it was. That building is the Concourse Building, which i went to look at this morning.

A Google search got me to, among otehr places, http://www.discounttorontohotels.com...c-arts.htm#top which has no photos, and there are no photos on the other sites the Google search turned up. I searched for "Graphics Arts" and Toronto.

anyway, i was right about the location, on Richmond near Bay. this is the heart of the sdowntown business district. and i was right about it being an apartment building with suites for rent.

It's a block north of the concourse building, but I did not walk up to look at it. Don't know if it is a new building or a converted old office building.

For location, it is excellent for both visiting business execs dealing in downtown Toronto and for many tourists, but other than that, I can't comment.

Location is close to City Hall, Nathan Phillips Square, Eaton Centre shopping, subway, underground tunnels to lots of other places, etc.

BAK

Well, I continue to be partly right.

The Graphic Arts Building is on Richmond Street West, just behind the Sheraton Centre Hotel, across the street from the street entrance to Le Bifteque, one of the Sheraton's restaurants.

The building is an old, classic, columned, arthitecturally significant historical structure.

It was int he back of my mind; that's because it used to be the Toronto branch of Hy's, the steakhouse chain, and it used to be the home of the Toronto Press Club. I've been in the building many times, but probably two decades ago.

By looking in the door, it appears that the plan is for a developer to convert the building to condominium units, and rent them out on a nightly - weekly - monthly basis until the suites are actually sold to tenants / residents.

At 4 p.m. last night there was one bum lying on the street in front, covered in cardboard sheets, and a second bum, better accomodated, inside a cardboard box, but that's what downtown Toronto is like this winter.

$109 a night in downtown Toronto is a pretty good price, and, bums aside, the location is as good as the Sheraton Centre Hotel's location. Tehre's a good seafod restaurant next to the Graphic Arts Building, too.

I have no idea about the quality of hotel-like services, nor the experience of the mangement in running a hotel, but I have my doubts. On the other hand, the furnishings should be new, the location's good, and the price is right.

BAK
