My fellow Canadians - I see that it costs an arm and a leg to fly to Australia. Debating about going there next September 2009. Does anyone know how to keep it under $2000? Not likely right?

Where are you flying from? It sounds awfully expensive.

For Sept. '09, who knows that's so far out, and most airlines won't sell tickets more than 330+ days out. But for this Aug/Sept you can find fares from YYZ - SYD at about $1500 on AC and Qantas.

Should have clarified - that quote I found was in US$.

What is your plan once you get there?
I did a Celebrity Cruise including airfare that was 15 nights for $2700. and I have seen this deal still offered for next year by the same company. You could always add extra time on at the beginning or end to do your own thing. We flew in to Sydney and flew out of Auckland.
Travelzoo offers top 20 deals weekly and because you have time to wait you could watch for a deal.

Check flights on some of the Asian airlines that travel to Canada for good fares from Australia.

Also check frequently on Kayak for comparisons.

Some specials are time limited.

We flew out of Calgary in Dec.2006 return Jan.2007 for $1399 on Qantas.
