I am looking for fall foliage within a days driving distance to Niagara Falls and points of interest for a couple in their 50"s We are not interested in wine but would enjoy beautiful scenery as well as comfortable places to stay along the way.We might be interested in Montreal and Toronto as well as upper New York state.

On the US side, the finger lakes are renowned for their fall color as well as Letchworth State Park on the way to the Falls... On the Canadian side, the Niagara Parkway between Fort Erie and Niagara on the Lake was once called "one of the Worlds most beautiful Sunday drives" by Winston Churchill... along with the beauty of the vineyards, you cant miss!!!

If you decide to spend some time near the Finger Lakes a lovely property is the Mirbeau Inn at Skaneateles. Even if you only visit the dining room, it is wonderful.

For Niagara on the Lake there are many properties to choose from, but our favourites are the Riverbend Inn, situated on the Niagara Parkway, and Inn on the Twenty in Jordan. Both are very relaxing, but elegant.

You couldn't go wrong with either destination as a fall foliage trip from the Falls.

The Niagara area has some lovely spots to stay, as TobieT mentions. Niagara on the Lake is especially pretty, and offers a lot of upscale accomodation as well as the George Bernard Shaw Theatre. But for spectacular foliage you need to go farther north to the Muskoka region (3-4 hrs from the Falls) to really appreciate the beauty. The Finger Lakes area is also beautiful, and you absolutely cannot beat fall foliage in the Adirondack mountains. The Adirondacks are probably 4-5 hours from Niagara Falls, to get right into the park. Lake Placid and area has a lot of accomodation.
