driving from Vancouver to Lake Louise

We made that trip back in 86 (remember Expo 86?). We did not have a car in Vancouver and had no trouble getting around by bus. We rented a car upon leaving. I don't remember how long the drive was, but we decided it was more than we wanted to do in one day, and we stayed the night in Hope BC.

A pretty close guess would be 10-12 hours. You would want to make sure the last part of it is done in the daylight. Some white knuckle driving that goes along with the beautiful scenery. Have done Van to Calgary in 12 hours but it makes for a very long drive.<BR>We are doing it this summer and have chosen to stay in Kelowna to break the trip up a bit.<BR>Have fun it should be a nice trip.<BR>Also topping you up here hopefully someone else can help you out.<BR>As long as you are staying in the downtown Vanc area. you probably don't want a car there. Ours usually gets parked for the whole time spent there. We stay on Robson Street.<BR>Cheers,<BR>Jan

You can drive it in a day but I prefer two. We drove the southern route there (via Calgary) a couple of weeks ago and the Coquihalla route back. I personally wouldn't define any of it as white knuckle driving - except in snow, although I'd say the Coquihalla way is easier. The highways don't have a lot of traffic on them compared to many in, say, Washington or Oregon.<BR><BR>Just to give you an idea of distance, we left Lake Louise late morning and easily made it to Merritt by suppertime.

We just did the opposite direction last week. LL to Kamloops for the nite. Whether you consider it white-knuckle or not depends how comfortable you are with the roads thru the mountains (grades, curves, trucks and RVs). Kamloops to Vancouver we took Canada #1 for the scenery so it took a bit longer than the Coquihalla. Beautiful views. Each day took about 6 hours travel time, with little rest stops to stretch, eat packed lunches, change drivers, etc.
