downtown Toronto parking
We will be staying at the Hilton Toronto on Richmond St for 1 night on Sept 6. The hotel charges almost $30/day for parking. Can you suggest a less expensive parking option within reasonable distance from the hotel?
We are driving into the city from Niagara Falls and will be spending a day in Toronto on our way to YYZ to catch a 2:30 pm flight to NYC. Our plan is to leave the car in the hotel and take public transportation on our 1 day of sightseeing then drive ourselves to the airport the next day.
Also, I think Sept 6 is a holiday in Canada, like in the U.S. If so, is street parking an option on downtown Toronto?

depends what your definition of 'reasonable' distance is.
any of the hotels / office building will be at least that. it's probably about a good 15 min walk in either direction from the hotel before street parking works.
try the eaton center, it may be cheaper and isn't too far.
other option is grab the go train into the city and leave your car out along the go line. then just grab a cab or bus to the airport.

Street parking, even on holidays, is rarely an option. There are machines you need to feed, usually three hours at a time.
How much money you save compared with how muchtrouble you go to is hard to calculate.
Toronto parking lots are pure capitalism; they change prices as demand changes, so it is impossible to predict prices. Monday (the 6th) should be a lot less than the daytime rate, which usually starts at 7 or 8 a.m., on Tuesday 7th.
South-east of the hotel are many office buildings, with low rates on weekends. But you may be at $7 an hour starting on Tuesday morning.
SAFE BET -- maybe not the best, but...
The front door of the Hilton is on Richmond Street, one way, running west.
Drop off luggage in the arc at the front fo thehotel and continue west several blocks, to John Street. You'll see a Chapters book store. Cross the intersection and look for entrance to parking garage under the Scotiabank Paramount Theatre. Find yourself a parking spot within eyesight of the exit, attendants' office, etc.
From Hilton: University Ave to Simcoe to Duncan to John Street. Not much of a walk, but drop off luggage first.
There's surface parking in the same area, but I like the relatively anti-vandal aspects of the garage.

Go train. Fare from Oakville (free parking) to Union Station is about $15 round trip per person, and then you need to get your luggage from station to hotel.
Nathan Phillips Square Green P toronto Parking Authoity garage.
This is about the same distance as under Chapters.
Entrance is at the top of York Street, which is an exit off the Gardiner Expressway, which is the road from Niagara.
Just drive up York, jog slightly right at the top, and go down the ramp under the City
Hall square.
You can walk undeeground from there into the sheraton Centre,up the escalator, across the lobby, out the door, cross the street, walk half a block, and be at the Hilton.
As a general rule, Green P parking lots are the most reasonable rates.

When I'm downtown, I always park at Bell Trinity Square which is accessed off Bay Street, across from City Hall. It's $6 on the weekends (for 24 hours), but it'll be quite a bit more on the Tuesday.

Yes, Sept 6 is a holiday. It's Labour Day.
Given that you have to be checked in @ YYZ around 12:30PM ( maybe even before?) for your 2:30PM flight to NYC on Tuesday Sept 7, why don't you consider spending the day in Toronto on Sept 6 but then returning to the Sheraton Gateway Hotel( or some airport hotel) the night before your flight?
Are you dropping off a rental car or using your own car & leaving it @ the airport? ( you did not say if you were visiting NYC or going home to NYC or what so I don't know if the car is yours or a rental or what).
You could check-in @ The Sheraton on the morning of Sept 6 when you drive in from Niagara Falls. Then you cld drop your rental car & just take cabs to/from downtown Toronto. On Sept 6 if you arrive @ The Sheraton too early to check-in, they will store your luggage for you while you are in Toronto. Or, maybe they can even check you in & just put your luggage in your room when your room is ready.
Then on Sept 7, the day of your flight to NYC, you can enjoy a late leisurely breakfast then take the Sheraton shuttle or monorail if it is up & running over to Terminal 1. If you are leaving from Terminal 3, it is just across the street from The Sheraton Gateway hotel.

thanks all for your parking tips. the car we will be driving is a rental. it seems too much of a hassle to keep the car just so we will have transportation to the airport the day after our 1 day visit to toronto. i am now considering returning the rental at a hertz office in downtown toronto on monday sept 6 and just take a shuttle or some other ground transportation to YYZ on Sept 7. there's 3 of us so maybe taking the cab might work too. do you think this will be more practical and/or economical?
thanks again for all your input.
