dim sum

hi,
trying to get together a dim sum thing for as few as 4 people to as many as 20 for a Saturday. I'd like the dim sum to be cart service, and not off menus. I've had Bright Pearl recommended, but I've also read some things that say it's medicore.

Any other suggestions? We would like to stay in Chinatown and/or dwnwn area.

Thanks.

If you're talking about Toronto, we've always enjoyed Pearl in the Queen's Quay Terminal building. It's nice to have a table overlooking the lake and their dim sum choices are broad. Ask about parking -- they might have a deal.

A couple of years ago I took about forty people from the US, Canada, England, South Africa and probably some other places to Bright Pearl on a Sunday morning.

We did not know how many peole would be in the group, and it expanded during our visit there, via the miracle of the cell phone calling other people to join us.

We ended up with about five tables, service was fine, people enjoyed the food, and the price was very reasonable.

Most walked over from the Sheraton Centre.

We enjoy Pearl at Queen's Quay a lot, but our absolute favourite for dim sum is New Treasure, on the north side of Dundas Street near Elizabeth Street in Chinatown. It's downstairs, under another restaurant, and doesn't look as pretty as Pearl by any means but the food is wonderful.

Thanks....we won't have a car, and in general, like the idea of being in Chinatown, although the Queen's Quay place sounds nice.

Regarding New Treasure, do they have cart service and could they accomodate a largeish crowd?

And, how lucky to live in a place with choices for dim sum. In the Balto. area, there are only two...both of them medicore at best....

If you do choose to go to the Pearl, you might as well check www.harbourfront.on.ca to see what's going on there that weekend. It's in the same location and there's often festivals, music, etc.

And you're so right -- we're lucky to have such a wonderfully rich ethnic mix in Toronto including a great Chinese community!

Sorry, elr, didn't see your post until this morning.
Yes, New Treasure has cart service, at least on weekends which is when I've been there. I'm sure they could handle a large crowd. The room is quite big and they have some big round tables that can accommodate lots of people. Shouldn't be a problem.

The New Treasure is located at 150 Dundas St. West. Here's a map link for the restaurant:
