Buffalo Mountain Lodge or Juniper Inn in Banff--Thoughts???

Spouse and I will be in the Canadian Rockies for the last week of Sept. Arrive in Calgary on Friday, Sept 22 and plan to drive to Banff and stay there for two nights.

Right now I am trying to decide between the Buffalo Mt Lodge and the Juniper. They both offer things that are important to us---great views, a balcony, somewhat away from the hustle of the town, and nice, moderately upscale accomodations. I can get a room at the Juniper for about $200 US including breakfast and a king premier at the Buffalo for about the same price but no breakfast.

I'd really love to hear any first-hand opinions or comments. I think the Juniper may be a little further from town but we'll have a car so that's okay.

After Banff our plan is three nights in Jasper, a night somewhere back towards Banff (Emerald Lake, Lake Louise??) and then a last night in Canmore before we drive to Calgary for a 1 PM flight. We're going to wing it for accomodations after Banff--spouse loves to find a good "deal" and I can go along with that as long as we start out somewhere planned and pleasant!

I've read a tremendous amt here and elsewhere and am feeling a little on planning overload!! Thanks so much for any advice.

I don't know the answer to your question, but here's another piece of information.

People on the travel discussion forums have been reporting that they have not been finding it all that easy to get accommodation in Jasper during the date range you've mentioned, so you may want to re-think your idea of winging it in Jasper.

Winging it in Canmore on the way back would be fine, though.

We spent several days at the Buffalo Mountain Lodge in July. I was at a loss to find the "beautiful views" referenced in their literature. Our room and most others overlooked either the parking lot or the road down into Banff. The Juniper is somewhat removed from downtown Banff but I think it would have better views.

All in all, we thought the BML ordinary. I'd shop around a little more. Maybe a special deal at the Rimrock?

Our stay in Jasper was terrific. We spent 3 nights at the Alpine Lodge. First rate. Right on the river. No restaurant but easy to drive into Jasper for breakfast at the Bear Claw and dinner down the road at Tekerra.

It would be worth reserving ahead. Lovely cabins with resident elk.

If you're looking for a view from your room then Buffalo Mountain Lodge is NOT for you. The rooms are tucked in amongst the trees providing privacy and an intimate mountain environment.

I haven't stayed at the Juniper but I have eaten there -- I would say the views (if you get a room overlooking the valley and Mount Rundle) are lovely and likely more what you're looking for.

Thank you all so much.

Yes, we are pretty big on views and very much enjoy sitting on our terrace or balcony at the end of the day enjoying some wine and reviewing what we've done and what we plan for the next day. So I've reserved a "room with a view" at the Juniper.

Really looking forward to our Rockies adventure.
