Better off with or without a car in Victoria ???

We are looking forward to our visit to Victoria this August. it is our first time to the area. The only problem is that I have difficulty walking longer distances than maybe a few blocks. Should we bring the rental car from Port Angeles or are there plentiful options for getting around Victoria without the comfort of our own car - taxis , trolleys ????
We plan to stay at Magnolia Hotel and visit Butchart Gardens one day. We found out that B.Gardens have wheelchairs for rent. I looked at gardens on internet and it seemed the paved walkways are rather narrow. Does anyone know if this may be a problem ? August will be crowded, We are going to the B.Gardens on a weekday. Otherwise spend time in Victoria.
Any and all suggestions are most welcome.

Victoria is very easy to get around without a car. There is a good bus system and we have other means of getting around downtown to see the sights. Here is a website you might like to look at http://www.kabukikabs.com/ Butchart Gardens handles wheelchairs very well so don't worry about that - the main walkways are fine. The Magnolia is in a very convenient location and isn't more than a few blocks from the Port Angeles ferry dock. You will find it very easy to get around and if you get tired you can always find a kabuki kab or a conventional cab. There are also other forms of transportation - horse drawn carriages etc. The main picture on this webpage is taken in front of the dock and your hotel is just a few blocks from there. Most of the pictures are taken right downtown where you will be. http://www.bceh.com/gallery/v/BC/van...bs040.jpg.html

We have friends in Victoria and have been there often. We usually rent a car, but have occasionally not rented one. Something I found odd was that our friends told us that people don't typically hale cabs on the street. Someone calls for a cab.

Susan - perhaps you heard about an incident a few years ago. A young lady hailed a cab and was assaulted by the driver. They suggested that single women have someone call for the cab instead of hailing one. It isn't a problem to hail a cab otherwise.

Heck, we did Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle without a car and it was easy-peasy! If you want to get to Buchart Gardens, there's a bus.
