Best Breakfast/Brunch in Vancouver

The Coast Plaza is a nice place to stay, Meg, and very close to everything downtown including Stanley Park; I think you'll be very comfortable there. As far as fab breakfast/brunch spots, they're just about endless in Vancouver (and I'd know; I live here!). It really depends on exactly what you want, and how far you want to travel. One of my favourite places to go for brunch is called Caffe Barney, on 10th and Granville (over the Granville Street bridge from where you're staying). It's a huge favourite with locals, and lineups can be long... but it's worth it. Right across the street is another great brunch called the Ouisi Bistro - brunch with a Louisiana flare. A similarly popular Vancouver breakfast hangout is Sophie's Cosmic on West 4th in Kitsilano (also south over the bridge from downtown). These are all relatively young, artsy places (ie, 30somthings). If you're looking for more of a coffee and pastry while wandering through shops, you can't beat the feel of Granville Island (and they have a fabulous bakery down there). If you're looking for something a little more formal, you can't go wrong with any of the brunches served by the larger hotels in downtown Vancouver, although I prefer something with a little more flare. A really nice hotel buffet brunch downtown is at a little hotel right on the south west corner of the downtown peninsula, called the Sylvia Hotel. But for the money, I'd make the trip up to Caffe Barney, Ouisi Bistro or Sophie's... they're a real experience! Good luck and enjoy. Kim

You might like the Elbow Room, a very popular breakfast place downtown and famous for the abuse that they dish out with the food. Very popular with celebrities in town, you must have a thick skin to eat there as you may well be good naturedly insulted or told to "go get your own coffee" by the flamboyantly gay owner/waiter.

Your hotel being right at English Bay is a great location.

I also second Kim's suggestion of the Sylvia Hotel for a day when you would like to enjoy a nicer breakfast/brunch, especially since it's walking distance from your hotel. Sophie's good too, but you'll have to drive/call a cab.

However, if you'd like a few more suggestions on places you can walk to for breakfast, I suggest Milestones for a nice, casual breakfast (on the corner of Davie and Denman). It is a chain, but the breakfasts are good offering the West Coast version of eggs benedict (with smoked salmon in lieu of ham), etc. When we had guests in town (I used to live in the West End), we'd take them there as the restaurant looks right onto English Bay so it's lovely to see the ships in the harbour, and a good place to people watch!

On a weekend, if you're looking for the greasy spoon locals converge on, go to the Grove Inn, right on Denman (1000 blk). Very large portions of the standard breakie fare (eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, etc.) at very low prices with good service. Don't show up too late though or the line will be out the door! No registrating with a hostess, just pay attn to who was there before you.

Enjoy YVR!

I'll second the recommendation of Sophie's Cosmic Cafe. The ashoura wheat breakfast and the pancakes are great, as is the nicely seasoned side order of potatoes. The waitress warned us against each of us getting a side order of potatoes, and she was right--one order was enough for both of us.

I would like to state unequivocally that IOM Sophies Cosmic Cafe is the most overrated restaurant in Kitsilano- a neighbourhood I have lived in for 23 years-all of them within 2 blocks of Fourth and Arbutus-Sophie's location.

Why in the name of all the gods anyone would line up to pay money for the mediocre stodge on offer in that place is beyond me.
