Baby in Quebec City - Advice
Hi all
My husband and I are headed to Quebec City next weekend with our 6 month old daughter. It is a test for me, to see whether we can all travel well together so we can go further afield when the time comes - oh and also to see Quebec City of course!! I have a couple of questions:
- how do I pack for a trip with a 6 month old? She is breastfed but just starting solids... we have a Baby Bjorn for walking through the streets, but what else do we need? Should we bring a car seat? Breast pump?
- My daughter has a cow's milk sensitivity, which means that as I am breastfeeding I have to avoid dairy and soy products in food. While I realise that this will be difficult, I am wondering if anyone out there has experience with finding restaurants while traveling when one has allergies or has to avoid certain foods.
You might wonder why we are traveling at all! But please please don't write and tell us we shouldn't go, or should wait til the baby is older and leave her with family (as I have seen in some responses before) - we are making this decision consciously and because I have a year off for maternity and we always said we wanted to travel even when we had the baby - we know it won't be easy!
Also, and Quebec City tips in general welcome!
Thanks!
KD

I don't think you should have to stay home with a baby at all...but I don't really see why you have to ask these other questions.
Lots of people have sensitivity to dairy (and other) products and they manage to eat in restaurants even when they aren't travelling. It's not so difficult! Look at the menu carefully. Ask your waiter questions about what's in the food you want to order, explain your special requirements, and if you get something questionable then just send it back.
You know better than anyone else the kind of things you need to pack for your baby on a general basis. I'm sure you'll get some tips about things that other people found helpful but overall this is something you should be able to handle - you're with your baby everyday so you know what needs arise! Unless you have been sat in the house since she was born.
Do you normally use a pump? If not then why would you need one on your trip? It's only a weekend. There's not much chance that you wouldn't be able to find a place to breastfeed. But if you think it's necessary then get one - it's not a big deal. Just remember then that you'll need to keep the expressed milk safely stored.
Will you need a car seat? Will you be driving or travelling in cars?

Hi kdwyer,
Let me start off by saying that travelling with an infant is quite doable!!!
My wife and I took our then 6 month old daughter to Aruba for a week. My wife was also breast feeding at the time. I'll tell you packing was not easy but we managed quite nicely and continue to travel with her regularly.
My wife absolutley braught her pump as our daughter was getting a bottle half the time.
We figured three outfits a day (took in to account, spit ups, leaky diapers and food spills). We figured out her average daily diaper changes and took a few extra just in case.
We also took jars of food, lots of toys, books and her favorite music that I store on my Ipod.
Take the Baby Bjorn, it will make your life earier as well as the stroller. My wife and purchased something called a Sit'n'Stroll. It's perfect for travelling and acts as a car seat, stroller, booster and is good on planes. We just love it.
I will assume that you are not driving or you wouldn't have asked the question "Should we bring a car seat?". How do you plan on getting around?
Have a safe and wonderful trip!
Cheers,
SD

Babies at that age are easy to travel with at least in my personal expeirence. all the easier since you still nurse, no bottles to lug around. Why would you want to take a pump? As far as a car seat, even if you fly into Quebec your 6 month old should be in the car seat from airport to hotel. Take the baby carrier, on the steep hills and stairs it will be great. Also take an inexpensive umbrella stroller, baby could nap as you enjoy a nice dinner. Its doable as I did it by myself with 2 carseats, a newborn, a 2.5 yr old, and the stroller!
