Advice on Montreal and old Quebec please
Hi everyone! I've been reading the threads and would like to get advice. My wife and I are traveling to Montreal and Quebec on 10/29 to 11/8/03. Please advice us on:
1. We plan to stay in Montreal from 10/29 to 11/2 and the walled city of Quebec from 11/2 to 11/5. Where else can we travel after that which is no more than 3 hours car drive? Any suggestions on where to stay?
2. In Montreal we plan to stay in Hotel Omni Mont-Royal which many have recommended. Are we within walking distance of the shopping and good restaurants? We don't plan to rent a car while we are in Montreal.
3. In the walled city we are thinking of the Hotel Dominion 1912. How many minutes walk is this to the Chateau de Frontenac? I'm asking this because I know that the Frontenac is in the middle of the walled city.
4. Lastly, how cold will it be in Quebec at the time we are there?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

1) From Montreal - the eastern townships - lennoxville, bishopton, bury, stanstead, etc. If the leaves are still on the trees - it's beautiful. The laurentiens are nice too.
From Quebec- Baie St. Paul, Charlevoix region, Ile d'orleans, Parc Jacque Cartier
2) Omni is great for downtown. The metro is safe and easy to use for trips to St. Laurent street and St. Denis street go to Berri Uqam walk up St. Denis to Sherbrooke - turn west to Stlaurent, up St laurent to St. Laurier - back to St. Denis and down.
3) Dominion is highly rated, in lower town - Petit Champlain. The Frontenac is close by, but in Upper Town, a stiff walk up the hill, or an easy ride in the funiculaire or tourist taxis that make the trip up the hill for a small fee. If in Dominion head west along St. Paul to the market and Victorian train station. - Good restos in train station.
4) Could be snowing, could be 10-11 and sunny. We've golfed in November in Mtl and Quebec, but you never know. Bring gloves, toque, etc, just in case.

We thought that Ottowa might be an interesting side trip, from Montreal I think it is about 2-3 hours. We would stay at the Arc hotel if we go there.
The Omni is a fine choice and in a perfect location for shopping and eating. You will be on the same street as the Museum of Fine Arts, Holt Renfrew, many designers shops, and art galleries. Off of that street are great areas of restaurants and more shopping.
We never drive once we arrive in Montreal, cabs are not expensive and it is easy to get around on the Metro or walk.
We stay at the Dominions sister hotel in Montreal, the Le Germain. We would try the Dominion, it gets good reviews.
I think within the city of Quebec, nothing is that far a walk, it is not very big.
Last year we were in Montreal November 6th-we had two days of snow, it barely stuck but it was cold.
Have a lovely time, do you know where you will be eating in Montreal?

Hi GDM,
1. Is Ile d'orleans = New orleans? We have read quite a few recommendations for New Orleans. This may be our next stop after Quebec.
2. We have made a reservation with Omni and waiting for a reply from Dominion.
Thanks for ur advise.
LouisP, We are researching now on the places you suggested.
Scarlett,
No idea yet where we will eat in Montreal. We are partial to French food. Any personal suggestions?
Thanks all.

Oh boy, do I have recommendations, LOL!
I am going to give you my list of places (new & favorites ) that we went to this past August. Then I will top the thread on Montreal restaurants that is great for a first timer ..
We went to Cafe Ferrier, Portugese Seafood, the best!
Au Petit Extra, as if they took a Paris bistro and plopped it down on a corner in Montreal.
Toque, expensive, perfect!
Cafe Cherrier, brunch and lunch-excellent.
Il Cortile, good atmosphere and Italian food, fresh, tasty and great service.
