Accommodations in Jasper

Can anyone recommend a really nice hotel/chalet orlodge in Jasper (besides the Jasper Park Lodge which a bit too expensive). I've read recommendations on Becker's Chalet, Alpine Village, the Overlander on these posts. If anyone can recommend one or the other or another place that is in a lovely location and runs about $100-150US (or less!!). I would so appreciate your comments. Already booked a week at the Rimrock Resort in Banff but am having a real hard time deciding where to stay in Jasper (it's our "belated"honeymoon/1st anniversary trip). Thank you!

Jasper House Bungalows, if available, are nice. Some of the units have a kitchen and a separate bed room.<BR>The property is located south of town, but not as far away from the town as Becker's. Unfortunately, Jasper House fills up quickly because of some good connections with the tourist industry.<BR><BR>More conventional, but nice places, include the Alpine Village and the Mount Robson Inn.<BR><BR>Mount Robson is technically not in Jasper Park, but on a clear day, the view toward the top from the British Columbia side is spectacular. Mount Robson itself towers over 13,000 feet, and it is the highest point in the Canadian Rockies. (I might add that some of the peaks in the coast range go up over 17,000 feet; so Robson is not the highest point in Canada by several thousand feet.)<BR>

You might also consider a bed & breakfast. Most are cheaper than a lot of hotels. I found a good listing on www.visit-jasper.com.

Message: Just a hint. Make sure you check repeatedly with Beckers that everything is okay with your reservation. We had made a reservation for last September for a couple of days at Beckers. When we arrived, they had a "record" that we had called and moved the dates to different dates. Funny, there was no "record" of a phone call to Beckers on my phone bill. (it was also the only place in 5 hotel reservations that was a problem) And they were really rude about it. At first they, wouldn't help us at all. After repeated requests, they grudingly gave us the name of another place. While we didn't end up staying at the new place they recommended, at least the new place was willing to help us find another accomodation. After my experience, I would not recommend using Beckers. But if you still want to use them, I suggest confirming your reservation several times. It was really annoying to arrive at a hotel ready to check in only to find that the management of the place had messed up your reservation. And they were not accomodating at all about providing a fix. Their attitude was that it was our problem to fix, which is not an attitude I would expect at a "really nice hotel/chalet or lodge."<BR><BR>

Thanks Jean for your warning about Beckers. I got a confirmation number from them when I reserved (4 nights) w/them this July and yesterday I received a confirmation and brochure from them in the mail so I hope we're OK, but I will check w/them before leaving on our vacation. It looks very nice from the brochure. We booked one of the rooms in their newer duplexes. Has anyone ever stayed in one of these - we're so looking forward to our stay. Also we're staying at the Rimrock Resort for 4 nights (looks fantastic) and another 3 nights at Paradise Lodge & Bungalows in Lake Louise (so we would not have to do so much driving from Banff to the sights we want to see in Lake Louise, Yoho Park. Our last night will be in Calgary at the Sheraton Eau Claire suites (rooms are reasonable if you book through their internet only, nonrefundable rates). Does this sound OK to you all??? Thanks so much for all your comments!

Also, encountered lots of rudeness after just calling Becker's today, to inquire about lodging later this Fall! <BR><BR>A *very* brusque reservations person...<BR>that combined w/that they don't have what we need for 2 nights in a row, & basically said they'd prefer we *not* stay there at all, vs. switching units, then...<BR><BR>I'm *all* ears/eyes for any recent experiences at Becker's & other closeby spots! Need to make our decision on where to stay in Jasper w/in a day or so. Help!! <BR><BR>Will look into other spots recommended by Bob Brown in prior posts... anybody else out there have some ideas, too? Maybe you had a great experience in Jasper this summer at some place *other* than Becker's? ;-)

I was in Jasper this summer, but we did not stay at Beckers. I am distressed to hear that service has deteriorated.<BR>We drove by the place of course, and the no vancy signs were up early. If they can get away with rudeness, they have too many customers!!<BR><BR>Jasper House Bungalows on the other hand had vacancies in the evening when we drove by. I was surprised. I don't know if the manager lost his connections with Brewster's Tours or what.<BR><BR>We stayed in one of the private home accommodations called Geike Suites.<BR>It was ok; nothing great. The bed was a queen bed and comfortable. The sitting area had comfortable furniture in it. The ceiling was low, and there was no cooking surface in the little kitchen area. There was a sink, a microwave oven, coffee maker, and a few plates and utensils, but no electrical coil for cooking.<BR><BR>Would I recommend it? Yes, to a budget type traveler. I was cutting corners this summer because the big prize is yet to come.<BR><BR>The two places I found I do recommend, period, were Shintangle Springs B and B near Waterton National Park, and Spiral Tunnels Guesthouse in Field, BC, about 17 miles from Lake Louise.<BR>Spiral Tunnels is one of those places that stays booked. Start now for next year!!

Hi - there wouldn't be any cooking facilities at Giekie Suite because Parks Canada does not allow (since 1992) kitchens in Private Home Accommodations.<BR><BR>A few still have kitchens as they were 'grandfathered' when Parks decided to not allow any more kitchens.<BR><BR>Most of the Private Home Accommodations do not offer a breakfast either - perhaps a handful do - so, if you are planning on staying in Private Home Accommodation, please check into what you are getting, carefully.<BR><BR>Ann

Hi Lila,<BR>We just returned from the west and spent two nights at the Hotel Jasper. I thought it was a bit pricey for what we got but we had a suite because of our 3 kids. The Jasper Park Lodge is incredible...one of the finest resorts of its kind anywhere. If there is any way you could swing it, I would splurge on the Jasper Park Lodge!!!

Sorry Lila, I meant to say the Chateau Jasper, not the Hotel Jasper. Check out Jasper Park Lodge...

Lila, We just returned last week from Jasper and we stayed at the Pyramid Lake Resort, on Pyramid Lake. It's closer to town (about 3 km) than Becker's Chalets and a really pretty setting. Definitely book one of the suites (not the founders cabins) b/c they are in your price range and nicer. Let me know if you have any questions. Caryn

Hi everyone, it's Lila! I have not checked these posts for a while as the "search" engine was missing and just checked today and boy was I surprised to see recent responses to my May request. Thank you so much for replying but, unfortunately, my husband and I have already completed our fabulous Canadian Rockies vacations! We did stay at Becker's Chalet in Jasper and were very pleased w/the accomodations (we had one of their new duplex suites, it was very comfortable and clean and a good value for the price) and we did have our anniversary dinner in the Edith Cavell room at the Jasper Park Lodge (a lovely dining experience). I've posted several replies since my return. Thank you to everyone who helped me plan our trip. Please feel free to e-mail me directly if you have any questions.
